TAKE IT FURTHER CHALLENGE, FEBRUARY

Yesterday I got my block pieced for the February block for Sharon's Take It Further Challenge.

The first thing I remember is my mother. My mother was 18 when I was born, and she had been married 10 months, so she was a new bride, and a new mother and I was her first born.

I remember things my mother told me like:

If you don't have something nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all.

Always wear clean underwear, because what if you were in an accident?

You catch more flies w/honey than vinegar.

Don't cry over spilled milk.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

I can't remember her exact wording, but it was essentially something like there is no sense doing something if you don't do it right the first time.

I also remember that if you mother tells you not to wear your good locket to school you shouldn't
(I didn't heed this advice and lost mine).

I had an interesting time making this block yesterday. I am trying to use just what is in my stash, and it was so dismal with these colors, I was contemplating using the concept and not the color scheme. But I was finally able to put a block together.

I also rediscovered something yesterday. I started out with a relatively clean sewing room. There seems to be a direct correlation with making a crazy quilt block and the shape my room gets in afterwards. I am going to have to pick up again in there today before I can do anything else. When I am making a CQ block, a crazy woman comes out and makes a huge mess!

  1. Hi Karrin, I really like this block and the story you told to go with it... its funny but it looks alot like the block I made.. I'm with you on how hard it was to use these colors and again like you, I am trying to use things that I have on hand already. I would love to see a pic of your space after you have created in it... might I not feel so bad about what I do to my owm room after a whirlwind session?? LOL !! Thanks for sharing...

  2. I love the block you made and read the story about your mother. Did all mothers in the world say the same verbs to their children? this sounds so familiar to me :))

  3. The block turned out just perfect, Karrin. I love the picture, and that lace on the left almost looks like hearts. This will be beautiful. Do you know what you will use the block to make yet?

  6. This is beautiful, Karrin! And I'm hearing my own mother's words echoed in yours. . .I think it's universal! As for the crazy woman who makes the mess when you're CQing, well, I don't make crazy quilts, but she's in my studio, too, making a crazy mess everytime I'm in there!

I smiled when I read what your mom said to you about a clean underwear. My granda always said it to me too!
Thank you for sharing your mom's memories. It gave me a warm feeling. :-)
