Hospital Sketches QAL

Well I caved in and started something new.  Barbara Brackman's new applique BOM called Hospital Sketches.  You can find out about it here on her Civil War Quilts Blog.  I have SO many Civil War reproductions leftover from making my Dear Jane Quilt, and I love applique, so I could not resist.  The blocks come out on the the last Wednesday of the month, so the second one came out yesterday.

I worked really hard to get my block one done before the end of the month, and I barely did.

It's not to late to get started on this Quilt-A-Long.  Check it out here on on Barbara's Civil War Quilts Blog.

Mystery Fabric QAL Reveal, Wednesday Wait Loss

I have been recently in a Mystery Quilt-A-Long with three of my friends.  We each got a FQ of a mystery fabric, and we were to make a project.  I saw that Moira@ The Quilted Snail and Susan @ Desertsky Quilts have posted their projects and you can see their projects at the links above.

This was the fabric we received:

I decided to use mine as a background for this mermaid.

I embroidered on it:     My Home Is the Open Sea
                                    Where Stars Shine Brighter
                                     And My Soul is Free

This is the back.  I am calling the piece Wistful Mermaid.  I really liked the quilting I did on her scales and rocks and ocean, but felt I could have done better on the sky portion.

One Monthly Goal

Well I finally was able to finish up my OMG for February last night.  My One Monthly Goal was to finish this Flourishes BOM block by Piece of Cake Designs.

Two more blocks to go, and then I can start piecing the setting blocks.  I will be so happy to finish this.  It has been a UFO for far too long.

When this BOM came out long, long ago, the owner of the quilt shop near my house asked if I would hand applique the top, which I did, and she would provide me with the fabric to do my own.  I think I got to about 7 blocks of mine done, and I set it aside for many years.  Meanwhile she had at least 2 other projects for me to do, and she gave me materials for my own top.

I will be linking up to Elm Street Quilts for One Monthly Goal.  I continue to thank Patty for this inspiration!

Slow Sunday Stitching

I'll be linking up with Slow Sunday Stitching hosted by Kathy's Quilts.  My slow stitching this week has consisted of putting binding on a still secret project, but should be sharing it shortly.

My lighting is really bad today, it is an overcast day and we are expecting a big rainfall sometime.

I finished my block for the Hand-Pieced QAL hosted by Patty at Elm Street Quilts and Kristin from Simple, Handmade, Everyday   This was week 5, the Dorothy Block.  I really appreciate Patty and Kristin's instruction and having this QAL.

This is a Block 10 from a BOM called Flourishes by Piece of Cake Designs.  It also happens to be my One Monthly Goal.  One more flower and I can call it done.  I'm frantically working on this today, because I want to start a new project!

Barbara Brackman has a new 9 month applique Civil War BOM called Hospital Sketches.  I have the first block prepped, and hope to start this tonight, after I finish the above block.

Spent quite a bit of time yesterday organizing my 4 drawers of reproduction fabrics yesterday, searching for something I never found.  But at least that area of my stash is organized!

I'll be linking up to Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.  Thanks for stopping by!

Hand Pieced QAL Week 5, Dust off a Quilt Book Blog Hop

This was week 5 of the Hand-Pieced QAL co-hosted by Patty at Elm Street Quilts  and Kristin at Simple, Handmade, Everyday.  They have been having such great tutorials and videos each week.  Thanks again to both Patty and Kristin for all their great help!

My block this week came out pretty good I think.  It almost seems like it took longer to mark my seams than to sew it.

I'll be linking up with Elm Street Quilts for the Hand-Pieced QAL weekly link-up.

Meanwhile the Dust off a Book Blog Hop still continues.  If you haven't had a chance to visit the line-up is below.  There are some great projects, and I have been enjoying visiting these blogs.

Dust off a Quilt Book Blog Hop, Day 3

Welcome to Day 3 of the Dust Off a Quilt Book Blog Hop, and the day I get to share my project.  I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our hostess Bea of Beaquilter for the incentive to make my project.  I have a HUGE number of books  with projects I would like to do in them, and I have been planning to make this project for YEARS!

The project I loved in this book was the sailboat quilt called "Summer Sails.

If you want to skip to the bottom and see my finished project, feel free.

I just wanted to provide  a little background why I chose this sailboat quilt.  When I first met my husband he had a sailboat, which he had moored in Mission Bay in San Diego.  We would spend the weekends sailing.   We took a celestial navigation course together in the evening, and right before we got married, we sailed to Catalina from San Diego, and back home with no problem.

This was a picture of that sailboat he had.  His mother painted a picture of it sailing in Mission Bay.

When we moved to Northern California, John built a two masted sailboat, which we took to various locations when our girls were young.  Here if you look really close the girls are on the beach beside the boat.  Our girls are now in their 40's and have children of their own.

John went on to build 6 more boats, including a houseboat which we enjoyed for a number of years.

Our decor has numerous sailboats, including pictures his mother painted,

The Star of India in San Diego Bay

We have sailboat models all over the house.  This is a model John made of the 27 foot sailboat he built with two masts.

We even have a medicine cabinet he built for our bathroom with a porthole and a ship on top.

Anyway I have been waiting for years (since 1996) to make this sailboat quilt. I had the flannel set aside.  When I was working, there just never seemed time.  We no longer sail, my husband is pretty much home-bound and disabled now, but we still have a love of sailboats.

The quilt top went rather quickly even with the hand-applique.  The only problem I had was when I went up to Fedex to get the ship patterns enlarged to 200% as stated in the directions, the guy that helped me did not do it right.  To enlarge the big ship, it need an oversized printer.  I did 4 of the ships, plus the large one before I figured it out.

Fedex did redo the big one without charge and I was able to finish up.  This is the large ship second time around.

The quilt is 62 x 81 inches.

I was having a great time yesterday visiting blogs and making comments.  I look in my spam folder today and I have 8 mailer demon messages, saying my comments bounced.  This is what they look like.  I have contacted google (the majority of them are from gmail  users, 1 from yahoo (which is what I use), and one from someone using Comcast e-mail.

I contacted Yahoo help last night, and they got back to me this morning and told me it wasn't them, to contact postmaster at gmail. They haven't gotten back to me yet.  If you look up this google answer, it talks about bulk mailing, which I am not doing.  I am just making comments on blogs.  I am not making comments on a work e-mail.  It is a private email which I have had for years.

This is making me crazy.  I cannot get an answer or help, and apparently there are a lot of people in the same predicament.   I have spent most of the morning and part of the afternoon on this researching.
