Slow Sunday Stitching

Last week was another busy week.  I had my usual choir practice on Monday. Tuesday morning I went to a local quilt shop and attended their wool club for the first time.   I stayed about 3 hours, and left early.   Traffic coming back from that town in the afternoon is atrocious so I wanted to beat that.

I almost finished one of my Wooly Christmas Gnomes blocks.  These were offered late last year on Facebook by various shops.  I thought if attended these meetings once a month I might be able to finish this before Christmas, maybe next Christmas.  This is the whole quilt.

I've almost finished the first block.  This guy needs his mustache, and he is supposed to be stringing some lights.  I didn't have the proper thread at the shop to do that.

And I started on the second block.

Tuesday evening was Begonia meeting which is always fun, but makes for a late night.

Wednesday was quilt guild community service workday at my house, which meant I had to clean up my usual work area of the kitchen and dining room on Monday as Tuesday was chock full of activities.  We usually have about 6-7 people attend, but there were only four of us this week.  We did get quite a bit done anyway.  What we do is cut batting for the quilt tops and backs people have donated, and also cut out the binding.  We will pin baste these at the first of the month, unless they are going to a longarmer.   We had no longarm quilts prepared so we worked on a bunch of those.

Wednesday was also my day on the Green Apples Blog Hop hosted by Carol @Just Let Me Quilt.  I finished up probably one of my oldest UFO's (unfinished objects).  Once quilted it will be a BD gift for my SIL Jeff.  I remembered this as being really intimidating 20+ years ago, but I was able to finish a lap-sized quilt.

This week I finished up my little Valentine stitchery.  I was trying to make it the same size as the one I did last year, because I wanted to hang it on this hanger.   But it is slightly smaller.

Several years ago I made a spring cushion.  When daughter Kristen was over last week she said "I don't have a spring pillow".  So I am making one for her, daughter Katie wants a wall hanging, and am making one for a friend.   This top is finished, I need to assemble the cushion now.

I have also worked on the Winter Blues wedding quilt.  This is a pattern by Bonnie Hunter.  I am actually 2 seams away from the main top being done.  I had hoped to have the whole thing to show, but as I was pinning the sashing on one of the seams, I must have cut one of the pieces slight bigger, so I need to take out two short seams and then I can sew the sashing on both sides of the quilt.  This is one half done.  Next will be the braided border.

It continued to rain throughout the week last.  The reservoirs are the best they have been in years.  I have heard we are going to be off drought restrictions.  More rain is expected next week.

I have these peonies coming up.

As I was pressing Winter Blues Saturday afternoon, I looked out the French Doors onto the patio and saw this lizard enjoying the sunshine on the doormat.  Next time I looked out they were to the side of the mat and had their arm propped up.  It looked like an awfully fat lizard.  I think it is pregnant and was trying to get comfortable.

This next week promises to be another busy one.  Wednesday is 5th Wednesday in the month.  On 5th Wednesdays our guild community service gets together at a local church and we bring the quilts that are ready to be quilted, or assembled, or need binding and we work for about 4-1/2 hours.  We are  also going to have a potluck.

Right after that, I am going to head on over to the first day of Day Camp.  It will have started at 9 am, but I am going to go for 1/2 day.  Day Camp is Wednesday-Saturday.  We will have a potluck the first night, and the rest of the nights will be served lunch and dinner.

I have been rounding up projects to take with me, and getting things cut out.  One of our guild members donated a bunch of jar blocks, and I am going to put them together.  Another guild member passed away, and there are some unfinished Sunbonnet Sue blocks, all cut out and attached to freezer paper.  I will assemble those also, and then will eventually quilt both of those for community service.  I also have several of my projects I am taking with me.

For Slow Sunday Stitching I will be working on the hand embroidery on the 2 remaining Think Spring Bunnies.  I'll be linking up at Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.

Little Green Apples Sew It-Show It Challenge, My Day

This is the second day of the Little Green Apples Sew It-Show It Challenge, hosted by the amazing Carol @Just Let Me Quilt.    Many thanks to Carol for letting me join.  The challenge this time was to sew something with green, or apples, or a combination of both.  The complete schedule is below.

When this blog hop came up, I immediately had just the project.  Somewhere in the late 1990's, I was still a relatively new quilter, and I took a class at the local quilt shop.  It was an apple core quilt class.  I made about 5 rows of apple cores, but I had not sewn them together.  In fact, the rows had taped numbers on them, to tell me where they went.  I cut out all the apple cores, but put everything in a plastic bag where it has languished in various closets ever since.  I pulled out everything and laid them out on the floor first.

I started out sewing the rows together by hand, as I wasn't sure how I I could get the pieces to meet accurately.   Each piece needed 5 pins in them to sew the curves.    After sewing about 6 rows together by hand,  I decided it was taking too long and started sewing rows together by machine.  I finished the top, which is a lap quilt sized.    I found out recently that my son-in-law Jeff had pulled out one of my grandson's baby quilts to wrap up in while watching TV.  It has been really cold around here lately this winter.   So this will be Jeff's BD present.

It doesn't look like I made much of a dent in the apple core pieces.  I have probably enough to make several table runners.     Before picture

After picture.

When I do get around to quilting this, which will probably be next month, this will be the back. This was also in the baggie of rows I had already completed and the cut out apple cores.

Be sure and visit the other bloggers and see what they have come up with.

Again, many thanks again to Carol @Just Let Me Quilt.  I finally got this UFO out of my closet!

Slow Sunday Stitching

It's been another busy week for me.  I spent 2 days last week helping paint at my daughter Kristen's house.  Granddaughter Kyleigh moved out several months ago, and they are making her former bedroom into SIL Jeff's office.  So we were painting a linen color over turquoise, and it required two coats, even though it had primer in it.  This Sunday we are painting the ceiling, and I am working on baseboards.

Wednesday was our guild meeting, in a new location.  We had to arrive an hour early this time to figure out where we were setting up our various tables.  At our old location, we had someone set up tables for our different specialties.  At this new location, we had to take our own tables.  Since I have tables at my home now for the workday at my house, I took two tables for our Community Service.   This guild meeting seemed to go on forever, mainly because our guild's quilt show is next month and we were trying to get volunteers for various activities.

That night was dinner at my granddaughter's place for her boyfriend Drew.  I could hardly wait for him to open gifts.  He was thrilled.

The rest of this week I have been working on my Green Apples project.  I wasn't sure I was going to be able to finish at least the top, but I was able to complete the top by Saturday afternoon.  It won't be quilted, but the top is done.

I've been thinking about some things in the garage, namely some sails for a 27 foot sailboat my husband John built back in around 1987.  I was trying to find someplace I could maybe recycle them.  John built 7 boats total.  I knew he got his plans from a placed called Glen-L Marine.   I looked up the name of the boat,  Chessie Flyer on Glen L Marine, and discovered 3 pictures of us, and our sailboat on the website.  I know John sent them pictures but didn't realize they were online.

It brought back lots of good memories sailing.  We used to take this sailboat all over Northern California.

We have had storm after storm recently.  This week we had 3 sunny days, and I got outside for a few hours Saturday.  I have tons, and tons, and tons of weeds, and got rid of a few of them, and sprayed weed killer where they are coming out of the bark I just had placed.   Some of my plants are blooming.

My brick pathway is growing moss, and there are weeds 6 inches tall coming up out of the cracks.

My hydrangeas are still naked though, just some sticks, as are the wisteria.

This week I had a chance to finish this stitchery by Bird Brain Designs.

This week for Slow Sunday Stitching I will be working on my sunflower quilt.  It has been sitting in the corner for a couple of months.

I'll be linking up for Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy's Quilts.    Check out what everyone has been up to.
