Hand Quilt Along, (HQAL), Slow Sunday Stitching

This was a relatively busy week, with Community Service Workday at my house on Wednesday.  I also took my friend Jandra out to lunch for her birthday Thursday.  I made her a gift which I will reveal during the next Sew It-Show It Challenge.

I have been working on my next project which is a challenge for my quilt guild.  We are supposed to make something that makes your heart sing.  I love the ocean, mermaids, anything to do with the sea.  So I am making a mermaid collage quilt and have been busy cutting out different collage pieces for my mermaid.

This week I received a text message from ReCreate,  craft thrift store in my area.  They had an over-abundance of fabric and were offering fabric $7.99 or $25 a bag.  So I grabbed a bad and filled it up.  The bag weighed 10.6 pounds so I feel I got my money's worth.

Granddaughter Kyleigh took the quilt that I quilted for her college roommate back to Boston last week, and Mallytza was thrilled.  Thanks to the new light brother Bill installed in my quilting room, I can actually see what I am doing now.  Before lighting was from an overhead fan light.

My amaryllis this week has 4 blooms now.

As for hand work, I am still slowly working on this sunflower quilt.

This Hand Quilt Along is an opportunity for hand quilters and piecers to share and motivate one another. We post every three weeks, to show our progress and encourage one another.  If you have a hand quilting project and would like to join our group contact Kathy at the link below.

One Monthly Goal, January

It's time to link up One Monthly Goal for January, hosted by Patty @Elm Street Quilts.  Many thanks to Patty for continuing this monthly motivation.

I stated my January One Monthly Goal in this post. , to get my Frolic Quilt, a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt from several years ago.  I had planned it to be a graduation gift for my granddaughter Kyleigh's college roommate for 4 years.

I am pleased to say I finished quilting the quilt, bound it, and as Kyleigh was flying back to Boston to visit her roommate, she took it with her on the plane.  This is Mallytza  and her quilt.

I'll be linking up at  Elm Street Quilts.

Shades of Blue Sew It-Show-It Challenge, Day 2, My Day

Welcome to Day 2 of The Shades of Blue Sew It, Show It Challenge starts hosted by the amazing Carla @Creatin In the Sticks.    Thanks so much to Carla for letting me join in this fun challenge.  Blue happens to be one of my favorite colors, and I knew I had to join.  When the subject of this challenge first came up, I already had a project in mind.  I had planned to make the daughter of a friend of our family a wedding quilt, and I had chosen Bonnie Hunter's digital pattern called Winter Blues.  While I knew I wouldn't get the whole quilt top made, I thought I could get a great portion of it done.  This quilt measures 81 x 95 inches.

I am making this entirely out of scraps I had in my cut-up strip containers, and scraps I had not yet cut up.

As of Saturday night  I had the 120-16 patches, measuring 4.5 inches made, the 99 9-patches, I had the setting triangles and corners made, along with the sashings and cornerstones cut out. My kitchen counter looked like this:

I worked on assembling it 2 full days.  One half is done, and I started working on the second half.  There is also a braided border out of blues.

So that is my Shades if Blue Challenge.  The digital pattern can be found here at Quiltville.  It is 25% off until 1/31/23.

The entire schedule is listed below, check out what everyone else has made.

Slow Sunday Stitching

This has been another super busy week, along with trying to get my project underway for the Shades of Blue Blog Hop which starts on Monday.  I knew starting out that I would only have part of it assembled for the blog hop.  It is an 81x95 inch quilt and  has lots and lots of parts.  This will actually be a wedding gift in the Fall for a friend of the family's daughter.  I have known her since she was a little girl, and she graduated with granddaughter Kyleigh I think.  I have all the components assembled and pieces cut out.  I will start laying it out on the floor Sunday and whatever I can get done by Monday afternoon will be what I show.

I also quilted this guild quilt, and was able to take it to the meeting on Wednesday for someone to pick up and bind.

Tuesday night was Begonia Society meeting, and it was propagation night, and we learned how to propagate cane begonias, how to do leaf propagation and rhizome propagation.  We came home with lots of cuttings and leafs, and I spent one afternoon taking care of all those.  I still have two leaves I am trying to root in water.

Thursday night I went and celebrated daughter Kristen's BD with some of her friends, and my other daughter Katie.  It is very kind of them to include me, and I always have fun.

For Kristen's BD I had downloaded these embroidery designs on Embroidery Library  They had them on sale last month, and I knew Kristen would like them, she loves anything with birds on them.  I made little cushions, and even put zippers in the back.

The amaryllis I bought in December already has a huge beautiful flower on it!  The one I bought last year is just leaves so far.

For Slow Sunday Stitching I continue working on my sunflower quilt.  It is hard to see what I have done so far, but I have worked on the flowers, and outlined most the flowers.  I plan to do some grid work once I am done with the flowers and leaves.

I will be linking up with Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.  Head on over and check out what everyone is up to.

Stay at Home Round Robin 2023, (SAHRR) Center Block

Today is the start of the Stay at Home Round Robin.  Gail @Quilting Gail is again hosting the Stay at Home Round Robin.  Many thanks to Gail and all her work in the organization of this fun event.

This is the third year I have participated.  This was the quilt I made last year.

This was the year before.

This will be my center block this time.  It was an orphan block from a BOM that  Melva @Melva Loves Scraps did several years ago called Pieces of the Past.  I messed up the block as it was written, and had to make another.  This is the reject.  I forget what the block was called.

These are the co-hosts and schedule for the rounds,

I'll be linking up @Quilting Gail.

Thanks for stopping by.

Slow Stitching Sunday

Another busy week has passed, and I feel I accomplished quite a bit.  This week I finished the quilting and binding on the Frolic Quilt, which which is a gift for granddaughter Kyleigh's college roommate.  She is going back to Boston in a couple of weeks and will give it to her roommate then.

Grandson Jaeger came over to pick up his going back to college cookies and I took advantage of having a tall young man over here to hold it up.  He headed back to college in New Mexico this week, with his dad, and a stop at Disneyland along the way.

I also finished quilting on this one.  This is a guild quilt I started quilting on 5th Wednesday in November.  I didn't have time to finish it then, but finished it this week.  I didn't make it, and I didn't bind it.  There are people in my guild that just like to put the binding on.

This is also a guild quilt I hope to get quilted by next Wednesday, so I can put in the binding pile too.  The reason why this wasn't put out on the general machine quilting pile was of those huge plain blocks.  So I offered to do it myself.  I have it loaded up and ready to go, threaded and plenty of bobbins wound.  I am just going to meander all over.

At pin basting this week with the guild, I pin basted one of my personal quilts.  I am planning to quilt this on my domestic machine so I can do more detailed work.  This is another one I would like to get done to be entered in the quilt show this year.

This was a 1995 BOM by Laurene Sinema called Father Christmas.  She was the founder of Arizona Quilter's Guild.  For 25 years she owned the Quilted Apple Shop in Phoenix, Arizona.  In 1998 I went to a quilt convention in Phoenix and met Susan Nixon @Desertsky Quilts.  I bought one or two of the above BOM, and then when I got home I asked Susan if she would go get the rest of them for me.   I started this around 1999 with the guy up in the right hand corner, and he hung around my sewing room lonely until around 2018 when I started working on a few blocks at a time.  I finally completed the top in 2020.  It is high time for this to be finished.

I would also like to enter this one, Hospital Sketches which was a BOM with Barbara Brackman which I finished in 2020.  If I get the above quilt quilted before our next pin basting day the first part of February I will take this to be pin-basted.

I have been working on a lot of secret things too.  I have been embroidering with my while I am working on my Shades of Blue Blog Hop project.  I was piecing a bunch of strips together today, and then looked at the back side and saw this.

Apparently I didn't have the bobbin thread properly hooked up.

It has been raining like crazy here.  I have been keeping inside for the most part.

What I will be working on for Slow Sunday Stitching, my sunflower quilt.   I have also been working on it every evening.  I will be linking up with Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.   Check out what everyone has been up to.
