Happy Easter, Slow Sunday Stitching

Happy Easter!

 

Happy Easter everyone!  Hope you have a great day.  I will be getting together with my family tonight for dinner at my oldest daughter's house with what family is in town.

Currently granddaughter Kyleigh and boyfriend are in France We found out they became engaged yesterday at Chateau Villandry in Tours, France!   We are all so excited and can't wait till they get back home.  Don't they look happy!

This week was another busy one, getting ready for workday at my house, and getting ready for a day quilt retreat Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at a neighboring town.  We leave our stuff a Veteran's Hall overnight and come home for the night.  

There were 2 rooms, my was the one less occupied.  I was up at the front near the kitchen and eh snacks, which wasn't necessarily a good thing.  I don't snack at home generally but when the snack table is 6 feet away it is hard to resist, particularly the homemade toffee and the guacamole and chips!

I think we had a larger attendance the last time I went, but because of Easter I think attendance was down a bit.  

I finished up granddaughter Klara's sloth wall hanging.  I had started it for her birthday in October, but then my embroidery machine needed a spa day in the middle of embroidering the one of the sloths on.  Klara picked out the phrase "It's temporary" to put on it.  I plan to give it to her for Easter.  

The majority of the time at the day camp I worked grandson Keaton's graduation quilt.  This is Kyleigh's baby brother.  He graduates from high school in a couple of months.  He will be attending college in Salem, West Virginia.

I decided to print pictures of the family dogs, and incorporate them into wonky star blocks.  In between the blocks there will be plain blue blacks.  I got out a bunch of my flannels/plaids/homespuns.  I figured it would be great for the colder weather he will be heading back into.    Keaton always wanted a pug.  They have 3 other dogs in the family.  His parents told him when his brother went off to college and he was the only one home that he could get a pug.  This is Rigby, AKA Piggy as he runs around and eats everyone's food.  

I worked some more on my Storm at Sea Blocks.  I need 24 of these, and have 6 completed.  These will go on my person lighthouse quilt.  Every retreat I work on them, and I still don't have enough components, but am getting there.  I could do 2 sides of these diamonds, but don't have the other sides cut out somehow.  

Every year our guild has a block of the month, and this year, it was a do-it-yourself landscape block of the month.  Each month you would add another component.  This was one of our member's landscape wall hanging and it was amazing.  

Lastly I practiced my free-motion quilting, getting ready to work on my Hospital Sketches quilt.  This is entered in our May quilt show and I need to get going on it.   I got some suggestions and pep talk on how to quilt it by Lesha, the woman that quilted my Ella Maria Deacon

This was a couple of hours of practice before day camp ended.  

For Slow Sunday Stitching I will continue working on Ella Maria Deacon.  I have 2 sides left to sew down.

HQAL, Slow Sunday Stitching

It was another whirlwind busy week.  In between showers this past week, I tried to get outside and get some yard work done.  It was pleasant this week between showers getting into the high 60's and low 70's.  Things are blooming around here between the pesky weeds.  

This area is a big area to weed, and I have about 1/2 of it done.  

The Cymbidium orchid I got at the plant show I worked at last weekend.  I plan to go to the Cymbidium society meeting next week.  

Tuesday night was Begonia Society meeting.  At that meeting we had a speaker from Sac State talking about ferns.  I took one of my ferns in to see if he had ever seen anything like it.  It is a descendent of a fern that has been in my husband's family for 122 years at least.  It looks like a Boston fern, but then it has lacy like leaves, and then some with both traits on one frond.  He said he had never seen anything like it, but it looked like it had mutated a number of times.  I have had this one, and another one for at least 30 years.  

We usually have a drawing for plants at our meetings.  We buy tickets and this time we had begonias and ferns to draw from that our speaker had brought in.    I had the first number called and I chose this staghorn fern.  

I've had this staghorn fern for almost 3 years now.  The orange tree is my neighbors that hangs over my fence.  

Wednesday I had guild meeting, and afterwards went to a brunch for Drew, granddaughter Kyleigh's boyfriend.  His mother, brother and grandmother also joined us.  Drew loved his new camping quilt.  

This week, I finished up this Kathy Schmitz embroidery.

What I will be working on for Slow Sunday Stitching is the binding on my Ella Maria Deacon quilt.  I have 2 more sides to go.   I will be linking up to Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.

Give It a Whirl Blog Hop, My Day

 

The Give It a Whirl Blog Hop started Monday hosted by the amazing Carol @Just Let Me Quilt.   Many thanks to Carol for letting me participate in another fun challenge!  Today I get to share what I made.  

The Challenge:    Somewhere in or on your project you must include a "whirl".   This can be a pinwheel, Dresden, or anything that looks like it's spinning.   Maybe a merry-go-round or Ferris wheel in the fabric?

Last year I made my granddaughter's boyfriend Drew a Moose quilt for is graduation from nursing school.  He loves moose, and was very thrilled with this quilt.  

Last summer granddaughter Kyleigh and Drew were going camping.   She had her car packed with camping gear, and as he was coming later, she asked him to bring a blanket and pillows.  He brought his moose quilt, and Kyleigh told him "you don't bring a quilt camping".  Drew responded that Gramma Karrin made it for him.  

Drew's birthday happens to be today, my day for the hop.  I had gotten a moose panel, and some camping/hiking type flannel to make him a camping quilt.   When I was searching through ideas for the Give It a Whirl Blog Hop, I came across this River Whirls By Connie Kresin.   

I cut my whirls out wrong, so I didn't have was not able to have them all going the same way, and didn't have enough of the green fabric to cut out more.

I labeled this as Drew's Camping Quilt, just so he knows.   I had some moose, bear and tree motifs from the quilt last year cut out on my Accuquilt, so I added those too.

SAHRR '24, FINISHED QUILT

 

This week I finished up my Stay at Home Round for 2024.  This was hosted by Quilting Gail and a number of 5 other co-hosts.  Each week we would be given a prompt to for another round on our project.  

Last year I had picked up a baggie of blocks and various components on the free table at our guild.  All except the last round and the white plain blocks came out of the freebie baggie.  This will be donated to Mercyful Quilts in Sacramento, through our guild that benefits hospice patients at Mercy Hospital.

Slow Sunday Stitching

 

                                                       Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I don't know that I will have a typical St. Patrick's Dinner tonight, but I might be able to go get some corned beef from the deli and have a sandwich.  

It's been another busy week, with community service quilt pin basting day, and Katie and I worked at the plant sale on Saturday in the Begonia booth.  I bought a few new plants, and a Cymbidium orchid at another booth.

One of the highlights of my week was getting my Ella Maria Deacon quilt back from the long arm quilter.  I had requested custom quilting and Leisha outdid herself.  I spent several days just looking at the beautiful quilting.  I need to get the binding on this one for our May quilt show.  I showed it to one of the quilt show organizers and she said they needed to set up a rack so both sides could be seen at the show.

This week I also finished another quilt binding for the quilt show.  This is my Blessings Quilt.  One-fourth of this was started in 1999 and then put in a bag for over 20 years with the fabrics.  I pulled it out of the closet last year and started finishing up the embroidery and making the pieced blocks.  

I also finished up 3 more blocks for granddaughter Klara's wall hanging.  I got one of the sloth blocks done before her birthday, then my embroidery machine needed to go into shop for some problems.  I plan to get this together and give it to her for her Easter.  I cut the sloths out with the die from Accuquilt, and cut the words out with iron on vinyl from my Cricut machine.  I asked granddaughter Klara if there were some words she wanted me to put on this, and she suggested "Its temporary".
