Slow Sunday Stitching

We have had some glorious rain in our state this past week, in addition to very cold conditions.  We had sleet and hail on some days.  I noted these clouds in driving around, some looking pretty ominous.  




This week was our quilt guild workday at my house, which meant I needed to clean of the kitchen and dining room tables so we could have some clear spaces to work.  We cut the batting and binding for quilt tops that have been donated and then bag them up so we can pin baste them in two weeks.  The ones that are long-armed are just bagged up with the batting and binding.  

This week I also tried to embroider another mermaid for the sweatshirt grandson Jaeger had gotten me for Christmas.  I did it once, making it as a patch using dissolvable stabilizer, and I just fused it on my sweatshirt.  


Well apparently the dissolvable stabilizer wasn't the thing to use, and the stitching starting coming apart around the hair and edges, so I took it off.   I tried to do it directly on the sweatshirt but that didn't work, and ended up getting a thread nest and when I tried to cut it off it made a small hole in the sweatshirt which I was able to mend.  

I next thought I would make a patch again, but use a piece of felt as the base.    I guess my  machine decided it needed a spa day because it did this next.  





So I took it over for maintenance.  Will try again when it gets home in about a month.  

I've accomplished a lot this past week, most of which are for blog hops next month, which  can't show yet.  I finished the top for my Dust off a Quilt Book Blog Hop.  I need to get some fusible to do a little bit of applique and then it will be ready to be quilted as soon as the backing arrives.  

I also got caught up on the SAHRR (Stay at Home Round Robin).  The last round prompt will be announced on Monday.  



Two of my grandchildren are back in town.  Kyleigh just got back from a quick trip to Hawaii.  She has a friend who is a flight attendant and was going to Hawaii and invited Kyleigh for a quick trip.  There was a 40 hour layover so Kyleigh and Madilyn enjoyed a couple of days.  Jaeger is also home from University of New Mexico for the weekend.  We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant in town.  The boys as usual were razzing each other.   


While speaking, and waving my hands around, I somehow managed to knock Jaeger's little dish of Habanero hot sauce onto my new jacket!  

What I will continue working on for Slow Sunday Stitching is my Valentine stitching from Bird Brain Designs.

Stay at Home Round Robin, Round 5

 


I actually got caught up this week on the Stay at Home Round Robin.  Last week I had a problem putting rounds 3&4 which were actually in my same round together.  I had mis-measured some things.  

I got that straightened out and was able to sew the borders on those rounds.  


I didn't notice until I got this far that I have one set of geese (the top section)  going the wrong way but I left it.  This will be something I give to our guild for community service, and I don't think anybody but a quilter would know.  

I really wanted to turn this into a rectangular quilt instead of square so I am trying to work that in.   So this round I didn't add anything other than the sashing to the sides.    The prompt this week was from Emily @The Darling Dogwood to make square in a squares.

I Was Featured On Wednesday Wait Loss 316-

 


I was featured this week on Wednesday Wait Loss #316 here.  Each week Jennifer at the Inquiring Quilter picks out quilters to feature that week.   Thank you so much Jennifer for featuring me!  

My mermaid challenge quilt I just finished was one of the projects chosen.  


I didn't get to check it out until Friday afternoon.  It has been a busy week.  I have been working on my project fcr the Dust Off a Quilt Book Blog Hop coming up in a couple of weeks.


Also Wednesday this week was my quilt guild's Community Service workday at my house.  I host the event every 4th Wednesday.  About 6-7 members come over and we cut batting and binding for the quilt top/backs that we have.  We bag them up, and the 2nd Tuesday of the month we meet at the community center across from my house and pin baste quilts for about 2 hours.   

Because the members were coming on Wednesday I had to spend Tuesday cleaning my house, and picking up my quilting stuff in the dining room and kitchen where I prefer to work.  

This week was also the I'm Kind of Sweet on You Sew It-Show-It Challenge hosted by Joan @ Moosestash Quilting.  You can read about my day here.  

This is one of my projects I worked on for the hop.  I was thinking of my late husband when I made this cushion.  I embroidered the motifs that I purchased from Embroidery Library.

I'm Kinda Sweet on You Sew It-Show It Challenge, My Day

 


Today is the start of the I'm Kinda Sweet on Your Sew It-Show It Challenge hosted by Joan @Moosestash Quilting.    She is one of the amazing ladies that come up with the best blog hops.  Many thanks for letting me participate.  

My first project I made was for my friend Jandra.  Her birthday was February 2nd.  She loves Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and hearts and I found these embroideries on Embroidery Library showing how they are sweet on each other.  I made them into a table topper.  


Also Valentine's Day I was thinking of my late husband and I also embroidered this and made it into a cushion.  The embroideries were also from Embroidery Library.



I also made this cushion.  This hand embroidery was by Bird Brain Designs.    



I have them both sitting on my sofa with the one I made last year.  


I was pretty ambitious and thought I would get one more thing finished for this hop, but being out of town last weekend slowed me down.  This is another one from Bird Brain Designs.

SAHRR Catch-Up Sort of, Rounds 3 and 4


I had gotten behind on the SAHRR due to going to see my grandson play LaCrosse in Albuquerque, and I didn't get Round 3 done before I left, and last week was crazy busy.  

I wanted to try to get caught up before the new clue comes out tomorrow.  I am sort of caught up.  

The round 3 prompt was from Chris @ Chrisknitssews for hourglass blocks.  I made 4-/2 inch hourglass blocks, and I was going to combine them with the round 4. 

The round 4 prompt was from 4th Round: Anja @ Anja Quilts.  I made some migrating geese  with Deb Tucker's technique sheet.    I didn't realize until I went to sew everything together that I made 5 inch migrating geese strips, so I am going to have to remake my hourglass blocks to put things together.  Also those blank spots, I was going to have plain fabric, but cut those out wrong too.   Will get it straightened out tomorrow before I start round 5.

Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching,

It's been a busy two weeks.  I wanted to get my mermaid challenge quilt done by Wednesday two weeks ago, as we were leaving on Thursday for  New Mexico with daughter Kristen and granddaughter Kyleigh.  We went to see grandson Jaeger's La Crosse game at University of New Mexico that was to take place on Sunday.  We arrived Thursday evening and had dinner.  Jaeger needed to study for the next day.   Friday, Jaeger had class and met us for lunch.  Saturday Jaeger took us to 3 quilt stores and I purchased fabric for what will eventually be his graduation quilt.  I did get a few pieces for myself including the mermaid piece on top.  


Later that afternoon we went up to Sandia Peak Tramway.  Temperature wasn't too bad going up.  We had dinner at the Ten3 restaurant at the top, and by time we came back down at 8 p.m we were freezing our butts off.  






The views were gorgeous and stars we don't usually see around here.  

Sunday was the LaCrosse game.  They played a team from Colorado.  Jaeger's team is newly formed this year, but they did great.  Jaeger ended up getting 4 goals in the last quarter. 



We ended up leaving Albuquerque at 8 p.m. and ended up getting back home around midnight or so.  Monday I was sort of wiped out.  

Tuesday I wanted to make a couple of name tags for quilt guild the next day.  It is something I have been thinking about for some time, and finally got a chance to work on them.  



Wednesday morning was guild meeting.  It was also our yearly challenge.  The challenge this year was "What Makes Your Heart Sing".  There were 6 entries.  I ended up coming in third place and won $50!    



Right after the guild meeting we had a quilter's garage sale.  We could rent a table for $10 and set ourselves up to sell unwanted books/fabric, etc.  I shared a table with another member.  I ended up selling a few items, and bought more than I sold.  I spent my prize money for sure.  My fellow tablemate had some great fabric and reasonable prices.  

What I will be working on this week for slow stitching is this Valentine's stitchery project.  I had intended it to be part of my Sew Sweet On You projects, but didn't get it finished.  It is from Bird Brain Designs.

Wednesday Wait Loss 315

 


My big accomplishment last week was to finish my guild's challenge quilt.   The theme this year was "What Makes My Heart Sing".

What makes my heart sing is the ocean, and mermaids, whales, anything to do with the sea or nautical.  

The pattern was my own personal pattern, but I did a collage ala Laura Heine.  A friend's husband is a graphic designer and I asked if he would draw me a mermaid.  It has been 5-6 years since he did it, and I was happy I finally able to make this quilt.  

Our guild meeting was today and I won third place.


The back is a Save the Ocean Print, I don't have the selvages anymore though,
