One Monthly Goal, July

 

My One Monthly Goal for July was stated here.  It was to finish my granddaughter Kyleigh's quilt.  When last seen it looked like this:  It was on my Handiquilter Moxie frame.  

I quilted most of it and the stitch regulator was acting up.  I finished the rest on manual setting, as I had to get a new part from HandiQuilter.   I did some quilting around the flowers on my domestic machine, and got the binding and label sewn on, and it has now been gifted to my granddaughter Kyleigh.

Slow Sunday Stitching

 This has been another busy week.  Wednesday was our guild's work day, at my house.  I spent 3 days cleaning my house, working in the yard, and had moved all the furniture to the side of sitting room/dining room so we could set up tables to work on.  We had 7 people in all.  Two ladies were sewing labels on completed quilts, one lady was cutting out binding, and another was calculating how much the quilted quilts needed.  Then three of us were matching up backings with tops and cutting batting.  When done we put them in a bag with the binding and a label.  In two weeks we will have a pin-basting day at the community center across the street from me.

I was also able to get 6 more Storm at Sea blocks done for my brother's lighthouse quilt.  These when added to ones I had already done will go on the top and bottom of the quilt.  Then I will figure out what I need to do to finish this in to a king sized quilt.  

Saturday I was invited to an all day scrapbooking day with a friend from the guild.  The last time I attended I had started scrapbooking my trip to Europe from 1968.  I attended the Baptist World Youth Conference in Bern, Switzerland with a friend from church. It was a 21 day trip through 7 countries.   The original photo book I had put them in was falling apart, they were in those plastic sleeves.   We were to report back to our church  on the sights we had seen on our return trip.  I had written in a notebook our day to day sightseeing.  So Friday I spent typing up my notebook, and researching what I had written down, because parts of it were spelled wrong, etc.   The last time I went was from 10-2 and I got 2 pages done.   I wasn't very prepared. 

This time I was prepared and took most of the supplies I needed.  The event on Saturday was 10 a.m. to midnight but I left at 7 p.m. because my bad knee was acting up.  But I was able to get 9 pages done this time.  But it was a fun day, and I was so happy I was better prepared this time.  

Last week I also gifted my granddaughter Kyleigh with her graduation quilt.  She was thrilled with it.  

I also gave my friend Jandra her Boho bag and she was also thrilled

This week for Slow Sunday Stitching I will be working on the sunflower quilt.  I haven't gotten much done since last seen.

I also will be tracing out these Peter Rabbit blocks to embroider.  I had a pattern before but I think I might have given it away.  After searching everywhere 3 times, I downloaded these Peter Rabbit free coloring pages.

I received a baby shower invitation to a former coworker's baby shower in September.  I noticed on the registry list she had several items with Peter Rabbit on it.  The baby is a girl.  So I decided to make a Peter Rabbit quilt.  I have some pink toile with Peter Rabbit on it, I think I have enough for the backing.  

This was included in the invitation.

UFO Blog Hop Starts Today, My Day

 

I'd like to thank Joan from Moosestash Quilting for the challenge of finishing a UFO, or something along an alien theme.  I have plenty of UFO's (unfinished objects) and was happy for this challenge.  I chose to finish two projects.  A list of the entire schedule is below.

The first project I decided to finish was my friend Jandra's Boho Bag.  I had had it at this stage for several months, the front of the bag partially embellished.  Jandra loves Minnie Mouse, so that was the theme.

I finished embellishing it first.  And added the lace, beads and fringe around the front flap.

I added doilies for pockets to the lining

The finished back and front.

I delivered it to her on Friday and she loved it.  She even has it displayed in her living room.  

The second project I finished was my granddaughter Kyleigh's graduation quilt.  She graduated in May from nursing school in Boston.  I sort of had this mostly quilted when my Handiquilter Moxie decided to start doing some creative long stitches.  I took it off the frame and ended up finishing the quilting on my domestic machine while I was being sent a new part for the stitch regulator.  I gifted it to her this weekend.  The quilt was called Flourishes designed by Piece of Cake Designs.

Slow Sunday Stitching

 It has been another busy week for me.  I neglected to mention last week, amidst my rotary cutting incident, but I have had a bad tooth on my right side for which I have been chewing on the left side of my mouth for 9 months or so.  That week the whole side of my mouth was sore, the tooth and sores in my mouth I think from eating too much spicy food.  

I have not had dental insurance since I retired.  Several months ago Kaiser sent me a card and said I was entitled to dental insurance.  So I scheduled an appointment with a different dental group, as the dental group I have been with for 40 years didn't accept this type of dental insurance.  So they brought me in for an evaluation and I have 2 cracked teeth and require 2 crowns.  The insurance doesn't cover this procedure, it will come out of my pocket.  So I scheduled one tooth the first part of August.  Meanwhile I signed up for a better plan which will pay 50% of a crown after a year.  So I am going to see if this first one will take care of the worst of my pain, and see if I can wait for the second one.  

This week was also guild meeting which is a nice get together.  Friday I got together with my friend Jandra and gave her the Boho Bag I made for her.  I will be sharing pictures of this on Monday, on my UFO Blog Hop day.   

This week was also our Begonia meeting, and I brought back several new plants.  I have been thinking about getting a new plant stand for the kitchen window.  I purchased this one at Amazon.   Of course I have to put it all together, so that is what I am doing Saturday night.  

My living room floor looks like this:

In assembling this plant stand, I am having a musical evening.  The first show I saw was on Paramont Plus.  It was called The Day The Music Died, the story of Don McClean's American Pie.  It was really good.   The second show I am watching is on Tubi called 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  So far they have had U2, Simon and Garfunkle, Bruce Springstein, Bonnie Rait, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Little Richard, Stevie Wonder, BB King, James Taylor, Sting, and Mick Jagger.    I am in musical heaven!  Music has always been a big part of my life.  

This week I have also been trying to get my yard in order.  Next week will be the first time the guild's community service work day will be at my house.  I went out to trim some lavender up today.  It was a huge plant, and as I started trimming, I realized that there was a lot of dead part inside, I mean a lot of dead  So I trimmed it way back to bare bones and will see if it comes back.  I filled up 2 trash cans!  I'm not sure there is much alive in there.  Our drought hasn't helped.  I have more work to do out front, but need my cans emptied first.

Several of the projects I have been working on this week I finished for the UFO Blog Hop, so I will share on Monday.  

This week for Slow Sunday Stitching I will also be working on my sunflower quilt.

UFO Blog Hop Starting Next Week

Slow Sunday Stitching

Well I am writing this tonight wounded.  I went to the ER late this afternoon with a rotary cutter wound.  I had been cutting something this afternoon and my ruler slipped and I cut my left index finger.  After I soaked through 4 Band Aids and dripped blood down the hall soaking through the Band Aid and onto the sofa, I decided maybe I needed stitches and took myself to the ER.  I was amazed, I was in and out within an hour.  Apparently they triage wounds and injuries into another section and it went really quick.  They numbed my finger and put in 5 stitches.  I am having to type the letters I usually type with my index finger with my middle finger.  Of course I had to wait until my fingers weren't numb anymore.

This week was not too busy, so I tried to spend some time working in the yard early in the morning as we have been in 100's again.   Again I have the Amaranth growing in two different places,  including out of the brick patio.

The trumpet vine is attracting the hummingbirds and also nicely shades my kitchen window so it doesn't get so much afternoon heat.

This week I was also able to finish quilting the guild community quilt I started quilting on 5th Wednesday workday.

This week I have felt like my deceased relatives have encouraged me to do certain things.  I felt like John encouraged me to watch the newest James Bond movie, No Time to Die.  He loved the James Bond movies.

I also felt like John's mother was encouraging me to hand quilt one of my quilt tops.  I only have hand quilted I think 3 small quilts, the largest of which took me about 20 years to finish, mainly because I kept setting it aside and forgetting about it.  

This week's guild activity was pin basting at the Community Center which is across the street from my house.  You can reserve a place for your personal quilt, or we are pin basting community quilters.  So I reserved a place for my small quilt, which is a reproduction of an antique block.

Slow Sunday Stitching

This week was a little bit slower for me.  I enjoyed a great Fourth of July with my family, good food, and watching the fireworks in my daughter's neighborhood.

The only activity I had this week was a board meeting for the quilt guild.  So I was able to get the rest of the Storm at Sea blocks done for my brother's lighthouse quilt.   I had originally thought I would add some filler blocks on the top and bottom, but after I had attached the sides of the quilt, decided I could make 6 more blocks, and not have to add any filler blocks, but had no more of the original fabric.  So Saturday afternoon went out and found some more fabric that will coordinate with the original fabrics.   Right now I have no floor space to lay it out completely flat.  

What I have done for slow stitching this week are my Gathered Blessings by Kathy Schmitz and a One Stitch at a Time stitchery.  These are what I will be working on this week for Slow Sunday Stitching.

Last week I tried to continue quilting on my granddaughter's graduation quilt, but my Handiquilter Moxie definitely had a problem.  I went back to the dealer and she offered me some suggestions such as cleaning the rails, cleaning the encoder wheels that help with the stitch regulation.  She also said to try to quilt a square.  I went home and tried those things to no avail, it had a problem moving side to side, it would stick, and then make a huge stitch.    I only had 2 more rows to go with Kyleigh's quilt, so I went ahead and finished it with the manual mode.  The dealer said she could come in 2 weeks after work, and check it out, or call Handiquilter which I did.  The technical support determined I needed the rear encoder, which was side to side directions, and is sending me a new one.  

Meanwhile this week I will be picking out the bad spots in Kyleigh's quilt and redoing it on my domestic machine and hopefully get the binding on.   I will also try to get 6 more Storm at Sea Blocks so I can add the top and bottom to the lighthouse quilt.
