ScrapHappy Day

This is my first month joining ScrapHappy Day.  I started a totally scrappy quilt last month, with scraps taken out of my my scrap barrels.  It is Winter Blues by Bonnie Hunter.  I am making it for a friend's daughter wedding gift in September.    This is how far I have gotten so far.

If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn it into something beautiful or useful instead of leaving it to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either e-mail Kate at the address on her Contact Me page, or leave a comment on her Scrap Happy Post. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. We welcome new members. You don’t have to worry about making a long-term commitment or even join in every month. Regular contributors receive an email reminder at least three days before the event.

Check out what the other members are making with their scraps this month.

Slow Sunday Stitching

Last Sunday ended up with no slow stitching being done at all, but an adventure instead.  Daughter Kristen called around lunchtime and asked if she could borrow my car, or have me drive up to Lake Tahoe.  Grandson Keaton had been snowboarding with his buddies for the first time and ended up falling and breaking his collarbone.  She didn't have a 4-wheel drive,  so I drove us up to Lake Tahoe.  We left about 11:30 a.m. or so.  I have never driven in snow but my car did just fine.  There were multiple stops to make sure you had chains or 4-wheel drive, and parts of the trip were 30 miles an hour.  We stopped for lunch before we headed back home.

He was supposed to have an orthopedic consult on Friday.  Apparently he is just supposed to wear the sling, and it should heal fine.   On getting back on the freeway, traffic was at a halt for about 45 minutes or so.  We would move 2 inches up every couple of minutes.  Eventually a couple of police headed down the road and traffic picked up.  We ended up getting home about 7:45 p.m.

Otherwise this week besides Monday choir practice was relatively free of social activities.  I have worked on things this week which I can't show yet.

I worked on my quilt guild challenge which I need to have done by the February meeting on the 15th.  The challenge was to make something that makes your heart sing.   What makes my heart sing is the ocean, mermaids, whales, anything to do with the ocean.  Several years ago my hearing aid practitioner's husband drew me a mermaid.  I have been wanting to do a collage quilt, so I have worked this week on putting this project together.   I have everything fused down, and it is ready to quilt now.  The tail doesn't show up right now, I am going to have to do a lot of thread painting on the tail to get it to show up better.

I have also been doing some machine embroidery.   My grandson Jaeger got me a sweatshirt for Christmas, and I decided I wanted to have an embroidered mermaid on it.  I used dissolvable stabilizer on this one.  I still need to attach it to the sweatshirt.  The color of the sweatshirt is mint green not gray.

While the embroidery machine is working, I ended up cutting out a graduation quilt for granddaughter Kyleigh's boyfriend.    This will also be my project for the Dust Off a Quilt Book Blog Hop coming up in March.  I ended up doing this, which I ended up taking out.

What I will be working on for Slow Sunday Stitching this week, are hand-quilting the sunflower quilt, and also this redwork.  It is a Birdbrain Designs Pattern.

I'll be linking up at Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.    Head on over and check out what everyone is working on.

There are some blog hops coming up that I am involved in.

One Monthly Goal, February

It's time to link up goals for One Monthly Goal @Elm Street Quilts.   Many Thanks to Patty and her new co-host  Anne-Marie from Stories from the Sewing Room for this monthly motivation.

My goal for February is to get my Father Christmas quilted and bound.  I finished this quilt in 2020 after starting this in 1999.  I had just the one top left block done for years and years before picking this up after I retired and finally finishing the top.  It is all hand appliqued.

I'll be linking up at Elm Street Quilts.

Hand Quilt Along, (HQAL), Slow Sunday Stitching

This was a relatively busy week, with Community Service Workday at my house on Wednesday.  I also took my friend Jandra out to lunch for her birthday Thursday.  I made her a gift which I will reveal during the next Sew It-Show It Challenge.

I have been working on my next project which is a challenge for my quilt guild.  We are supposed to make something that makes your heart sing.  I love the ocean, mermaids, anything to do with the sea.  So I am making a mermaid collage quilt and have been busy cutting out different collage pieces for my mermaid.

This week I received a text message from ReCreate,  craft thrift store in my area.  They had an over-abundance of fabric and were offering fabric $7.99 or $25 a bag.  So I grabbed a bad and filled it up.  The bag weighed 10.6 pounds so I feel I got my money's worth.

Granddaughter Kyleigh took the quilt that I quilted for her college roommate back to Boston last week, and Mallytza was thrilled.  Thanks to the new light brother Bill installed in my quilting room, I can actually see what I am doing now.  Before lighting was from an overhead fan light.

My amaryllis this week has 4 blooms now.

As for hand work, I am still slowly working on this sunflower quilt.

This Hand Quilt Along is an opportunity for hand quilters and piecers to share and motivate one another. We post every three weeks, to show our progress and encourage one another.  If you have a hand quilting project and would like to join our group contact Kathy at the link below.

One Monthly Goal, January

It's time to link up One Monthly Goal for January, hosted by Patty @Elm Street Quilts.  Many thanks to Patty for continuing this monthly motivation.

I stated my January One Monthly Goal in this post. , to get my Frolic Quilt, a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt from several years ago.  I had planned it to be a graduation gift for my granddaughter Kyleigh's college roommate for 4 years.

I am pleased to say I finished quilting the quilt, bound it, and as Kyleigh was flying back to Boston to visit her roommate, she took it with her on the plane.  This is Mallytza  and her quilt.

I'll be linking up at  Elm Street Quilts.

Shades of Blue Sew It-Show-It Challenge, Day 2, My Day

Welcome to Day 2 of The Shades of Blue Sew It, Show It Challenge starts hosted by the amazing Carla @Creatin In the Sticks.    Thanks so much to Carla for letting me join in this fun challenge.  Blue happens to be one of my favorite colors, and I knew I had to join.  When the subject of this challenge first came up, I already had a project in mind.  I had planned to make the daughter of a friend of our family a wedding quilt, and I had chosen Bonnie Hunter's digital pattern called Winter Blues.  While I knew I wouldn't get the whole quilt top made, I thought I could get a great portion of it done.  This quilt measures 81 x 95 inches.

I am making this entirely out of scraps I had in my cut-up strip containers, and scraps I had not yet cut up.

As of Saturday night  I had the 120-16 patches, measuring 4.5 inches made, the 99 9-patches, I had the setting triangles and corners made, along with the sashings and cornerstones cut out. My kitchen counter looked like this:

I worked on assembling it 2 full days.  One half is done, and I started working on the second half.  There is also a braided border out of blues.

So that is my Shades if Blue Challenge.  The digital pattern can be found here at Quiltville.  It is 25% off until 1/31/23.

The entire schedule is listed below, check out what everyone else has made.
