Sewing with Kyleigh, I'm a Winner!

I've had several posts to write recently, but haven't had time to write them.  I keep thinking I will do it after the grandchildren go home on Mondays and Thursdays, but I am too tired.  So I have a flurry of posts this weekend.

The Friday before last, had a great time sewing with granddaughter #1.  Her 19th birthday is coming up, and she has been interested in sewing for several years, has tried to borrow her mother's sewing machine.  Her mother always says "Talk to Grandma".  We have had a difficult time scheduling time together this summer as Kyleigh has been a nanny to 2 girls, takes them to their swim lessons, plus swims herself to keep in practice for when she heads back to college. 

I decided for her birthday this year to give her my old Singer Touch and Sew, but wanted to make sure she knew how to use it, and make a simple pattern.  She finally had an evening off and we were able to spend some time together.  

Kyleigh has always been my special girl, is an artist,loves doing crafty things and I think she will be whiz at sewing.  

She did pretty good at staying at 5/8 inch seam.   We decided to have her make a simple bag.  She went through my stash, and finally ended up with a print I used as a border on her mother's quilt I made when she was 16!

Earlier this week, I decided she needed a sewing bag to put her things in, and I made this using Jenny of Elefantz's tutorial.  I'm going to fill this up with some notions, and give it to her on her actual BD

I never know where I am supposed to look on a selfie, so I look dumb.  But here is a pic of us together.  

Also this week, I found out I was a winner of the pattern of this Hexagon Table Topper from Joy @Days Filled with Joy  I think I am going to try to whip one of these out the next couple of days.  I have a friend I used to work with whose birthday is coming up.  Thanks so much Joy, you made my week!

I've Been Featured, Am a Winner, Redwork Nursery Rhymes

Yesterday was a really good day for me.  I found out my Flourishes top was featured on Wednesday Wait Loss at Inquiring Quilter.  Thanks so much Jennifer, I am really honored to be featured again!

Yesterday while my husband was taking a nap, I decided to do some yard work.  When I came in, my husband told me the doorbell had rung, and asked if I had heard it, but it was when I was outside.  I went to the door, and there was a huge box out there and the packing slip said I was the Hobbs Batting Love Letter Winner. At first I wondered what DH had ordered now from Amazon!  

Several months ago on Instagram, Hobbs Batting had a contest and you had to write a Love Letter to the company telling why you like Hobbs batting.  It had to be sent in the mail, and what you said, and presentation, how you decorated the letter were all considerations.   I can't remember what I wrote, but I have always used Hobbs Batting.  Anyway I won a whole box of batting including:

I am so honored to have won this prize, and I happen to have 6 quilts awaiting my quilting right now.  

Earlier this week, I finally completed all the Redwork Nursery Rhyme blocks which I am gifting to my sister-in-law for her to set in a quilt for her first granddaughter.  I finished the last block, Yankee Doodle.

On my Quarter 2 Finish-A-Long List, I wanted to finish the last 3 blocks, and I have now completed that task.

I unexpected had my granddaughter today, as her daycare provider was sick, so didn't get much done, but I am busy finishing up my Nutcracker block embellishment, and I will be able to tick another thing off my list.

Thanks so much Carla, I really appreciate it, and I was quite excited spending my gift card at Fat Quarter Shop last night on some charm packs.  I really had a great time participating in the All About Strings Blog Hop, and this was the icing on the cake!

Meanwhile I finished the flimsy on my second Hands2Help top.  This one will be going to Mercyful Quilts in Sacramento, CA.  I live not far from Bernie, and she has graciously agreed to meet me so I can drop these off when I am done.  This is again done with swap blocks from a swap in 2000 I think.  The line of fabric was called Rhapsody in Blue, designed by Bonnie Stratton and was for Quilt for a Cure for breast cancer.  I bought almost all the different fabrics in this line.  I did make a quilt for daughter Kristen for her marriage.  This line also had these really nice borders.  I bought the border fabric in yellow (used for Kristen's), navy blue (I apparently bought 2 of this one) and a white border fabric.   Right now I am trying to use up this fabric, or else get the amount down quite a bit.   I'm going to have to figure out what I am going to put in those big blank areas.  I am great at meandering, but am going to have to practice some motifs before I quilt these.  

So I am busy working on a second quilt with this line of fabric, and I still have some swap blocks left.  I also had a lot of these leftover pieces from baskets.  So yesterday I started assembling some more baskets to use these leftover basket bottoms.  I wondered why it looked like they had been taken off something, but didn't really think too long about it.  I knew they were for 12 inch fruit baskets. See how much that dark blue hands off the rectangle?  That should have been a clue

See how there is no seam allowance when I had the light blue to attach to the bottom?

I thought about it overnight.  I got up this morning and measured the rectangle pieces.  They are 1/2 inch too short.  That is why nothing is working right, and I have no seam allowance.

Right now I am taking these apart and will cut out some more feet for the baskets and redo them.  "DH said just start over".  But I can't do that.  I'm going to cut those other pieces up for scraps so I don't try to use them again!
