Slow Sunday Stitching

February is National Embroidery Month, and I seem to have been keeping busy with embroidery in the evenings.  I finished this squirrel piece from the Kathy Schmitz One Stitch at a Time Embroidery Club.

This was the second one I finished this week.

And I started this one, which I hope to finish for my Slow Sunday Stitching this week, because the new pattern comes out on March 1st.

I'll be linking up with Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.    Head on over and check what everyone has been up to!

What I am spending my Saturday evening doing is ripping out this free motion quilting I did on my project for the Dust Off a Quilt Book that starts on Monday.  I started quilting and checked my tension on the back and it looked fine.  I was 2/3 done quilting and I checked the tension again on the back, and it looked like this, so therefore I am ripping out the bad part.  I have a lot of eyelashes on the back.

Last week, Barbara @Cat Patches had a post about going back to the area she grew up in, Oceanside/Vista area in Southern California.  This led me to looking up online to what the house we lived in looked like now.

I was born in Maryland, and we moved to Vista, California in 1964 when I was 14.  My parents bought this house, that had property, about 1-3/4 acres.  We had fig trees on the left side of the house, lemon trees in the back of the house.  As you are looking at the house out front, to the right there were eucalyptus trees and kamquats between our house and the neighbors.  I The house was originally a builders personal home that was built in 1959.  It was painted yellow, with white trim.  All I have is this black and white picture.  It was a very pretty property and a great place to grow up.

After I saw Barbara's post, I started looking up our property.  My parents lived there until the early 80's I think.  I had to try to remember our address, and I finally pinpointed it by knowing the neighbor's that lived behind us.

This is apparently the property now.  I almost didn't recognize it.   It is owned by some plumbers.  I don't know if it is a residence or business now.  I almost didn't recognize it, with almost all the vegetation down, and the barn off to the side.

I guess it is true you can't go back.

Guess I'd better get busy ripping out!  Thanks for stopping by!

Stay at Home Round Robin-Round 6

All information about the SAHRR, Stay at Home Round Robin can be found here at Quilting Gail with all the previous weeks' prompts.

Week 6's prompt for the round was by Susan at Quilt Fabrication which was log cabins.  I've always avoided log cabin blocks, mainly because when I first started quilting, my stitching was not even, and my log cabin blocks did not go together the way they were supposed to.  You could probably call them wonky log cabins.  I actually found they were not as bad as I remembered, perhaps I might be a better piecer!

I made 4 log cabin blocks for this round but did not attach them yet.  I am waiting till next week's last round by Quilting Gail to see what I want to do.  I might make more log cabins at that time.  My top right now is measuring about 52 inches square.

I'll be linking up to Quilt Fabrication.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

One Monthly Goal, February, Finished

Time to link up One Monthly Goal finishes for February at Elm Street Quilts.    I really appreciate this monthly motivation by Patty and all she does!

I stated my one monthly goal here to make a project for the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop.  I am happy to say that I finished my project.  You can read about it here and see the list of participants and their projects.   Although I only used the middle right fabric for the back, I used completely different fabrics for my stripes project.

Linking up to Elm Street Quilts for One Monthly Goal.    Thanks again to Patty and all she does to keep us motivated!

Show Your Stripes Blog Hop, My Day

Yesterday there were some great projects on the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop.  Many thanks to
Carla @ Creatin in the Sticks and the great blog hops she comes up with!  The list of the full schedule is below.

When I was first contemplating what I would make for this blog hop with stripes, I pulled these fabrics I have with stripes in them.  I was first thinking about cutting these up and making star blocks.

Then I pulled my old quilt books out and found this one.  I made the sailboat quilt last year in this book, and I have always liked this one with the stripes.

I began to make it, and it fought me every inch of the way.  For one thing the pieces of fabric are cut on the bias, and apparently I must have stretched it this way and that stitching it together.  By the time I appliqued the stripes on top it was really wonky.  I had to really trim it down to make it square.

This is the finished product.  I plan to give this for a comfort quilt and I think someone will like it.  I used a stripe for the backing, and pieced together a number of stripes for the binding.

I've always loved using stripes in my quilts.  This is one I designed and made years ago.  I did bluework embroidery on the blocks, and set them in a a crazy quilt like pattern.  I also used two of the boats my husband built in the patterns.  This one has a wavy, stripe border which I love.

Be sure and visit the others on this blog hop, there are some great projects being shown.
