HQAL, Slow Sunday Stitching

Another 3 weeks has flown by, and time again to check in again for the Hand Quilt Along.   Three weeks ago I showed this stitchery half-finished.    I did finish it up.

I also finished another one for my son-in-law.  I wrapped his BD gift card in it.

I also got this stitched up, and plan to make it into a cushion cover for my daughter, and plan to do another one for the other daughter too.  I started making them a different cushion cover for the different seasons.


Since the last Hand Quilt Along I also finished my project for the Stitching Sunshine Blog Hop.  My day was here.   


Father's Day last week was a great day, our daughters SIL, and grandchildren all came over to visit with John.    We loved seeing them, and it was a great day!

What I've Been Up To

I've been trying to finish up a number of items this week.  The second quarter of the 2020 Finish-A:Long is coming to an end, and I've been trying to finish up items on my list, and also a few that aren't.

Last year in the Facebook Group Quilts by Cheri Friendship Group we had a stitch along, and I stitched this piece.  I decided to make it into a patriotic cushion. 


This week, I also stitched up this piece.  I plan to make it into a cushion cover for one daughter, and plan to stitch another one for the other daughter.   I've been making them a different cover for each season.   This was one of the stitcheries last year on the Kathy Schmitz One Stitch at a Time embroidery group. 



This week I also got caught up on the Joy McDonald Scrappy Mystery @ Days Filled with Joy  I still need to sew my blocks together. 



I also caught up on the latest Pieces From the Past block from Melva Loves Scraps,  This block is called Friendship Quilt.  When this one is eventually finished in 2021, it will be grandson Jaeger's graduation quilt.  The blocks in this quilt were all originally published in the Kansas City Star, and Melva got permission from C&T Publishing for her to scan and share them with us.



Also this week, I got this month's Ella Maria Deacon blocks done, offered through Sentimental Stitches.  

This block gave me fits.  The first one I made wouldn't lie flat.  It looked more like a hat.  I pressed the seams open, but it was just too curved.  Thankfully the second one worked out better. 



These are all 4 blocks for this month.

Stitching Sunshine Blog Hop. My Day



Welcome to the first day of the Stitching Sunshine Blog Hop, which happens also to be my day.  And thanks so much to the fabulous Carla @ Stitchin in the Sticks for organizing this.  I have the whole schedule listed below.  Be sure and visit the others that are on for today too. 

Right around the time that this blog hop was announced, Susie Wright @fixer_of_old_old_quilts whom I follow on Instagram announced a #sunflowersewalong.  The original 1863 inspiration block came from the collection of Cathy Erickson @quiltingcat2, who kindly gave us her permission to copy this.  Susie drafted the block to fit an 18" block.  I decided this would be the perfect project for the Stitching Sunshine blog hop.

I decided I would make this a 4 block quilt.  This is all needle-turned applique.  The blocks are  done mostly with Civil War Reproduction fabrics. 









I then had to decide what kind of border I wanted to do.  I finally decided on one I had seen in Barbara Brackman's book, Quilts From the Civil War, a dog-toothed applique border.

This is the finished top, being held by my grandson Jaeger.

Slow Sunday Stitching

Not much has been going on the last couple of days, my bad knee is having problems.  I am supposed to get a video appointment on Sunday.  I haven't been able to get my cortisone shot since before Covid-19 shelter in place started.  I called the advice nurse tonight, trying to set up an appointment with my doctor, or the orthopedic clinic.  Depending on what goes on with the video appointment on Sunday, they may give me a referral.   I've been having trouble sleeping at night and now it is painful to walk. 

One thing I did get done was my project for the Stitching Sunshine Blog Hop which starts on Monday, at least the quilt top. 

What I will be working on this Sunday for my Slow Sunday Stitching is this embroidery.  I decided I wanted to do this one for my Son-In-Law who happens to drink wine.  His birthday is on July 1st and I am going to wrap his gift card up in this towel. 



I also will be getting the applique ready for this Father Christmas.  This is one of the last 3 I need to do to complete this project.  



My daughter sent me this cute picture of my youngest granddaughter Klara.

What I've Been Up To, Great Mail Days!

I'm still working on my project for the Stitching Sunshine Blog Hop, but I do have a few things to show that I have been also working on.

First up, I got May's block for Cassandra's Circle BOM, the 2020 applique BOM by Barbara Brackman @Civil War Quilts.  I have been trying to keep my blocks mostly to blues, so I chose a brownish print for the stems and leaves, so the blue is what stands out.    This block was called Russian Sunflower. 



Joy @ Days Filled with Joy is having a scrappy mystery right now.  The steps are coming out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and I am caught up until the next step.  It's using up a lot of my 2-1/2 inch squares, and I am thrilled! 



I have also had a couple of fun mail days.   First, I received a gift from Sarah @ Confessions of a Fabric Addict for my participation in the Hands2Help Confort Quilt Challenge.  My surprise was a little pouch containing two charm packages of Moda Fabrics, and I love them.  Thanks so much to Sarah and all she does! 



My second surprise in the mail came from my friend Moira @  The Quilted Snail.  She knows how I love nautical fabric and she sent me a package with some FQs, and they are lovely.  Many thanks again Moira you made my day!



My neighbor has an apricot tree right on the other side of my fence.  I was wondering who kept eating apricots and dropping the skins on my side of the fence.  I caught the culprit red-handed.  This guy sits on the fence and munches away and then drops the skin and seeds in my garden!




Hope you  are all having a great week.  It is hot, hot, hot here ( upper 90's) and  I need to get my gardening done early in the mornings.  I was trying to repot some plants this afternoon and by the time I came inside I had sweat pouring off me.   Hopefully tomorrow I can get an earlier start !

Slow Sunday Stitching, What I've Been Up to

I've had a pretty productive week this week.  The beginning of the week my daughter Kristen called and told me of a plant sale in a nearby town she had heard about on Facebook.  We made a trip there after Kristen got off work, and I found about 5 plants.  Then Wednesday, grandson Keaton came over and helped me with lawn, and to taking recycling in after 6 months!  So glad to get those out of here.  He also happened to help Papa be able to use the new add-on to his computer game!  

I was able to get the next block from Pieces From the Past the new sewalong @ Melva's Got Scraps.  This block was called Modern Broken Dishes.  The blocks from this sewalong were originally published in the Kansas City Star and Melva got permission for us to use these.  First I made the block wrong, by misreading the directions.  


This new blogger is driving me nuts!  I can't right justify this now all of a sudden.  Anyway I remade the block the right way this time.  




I also made a block for a private BOM I am in.  This one is Christmas themed.  


Joy @ Days Filled with Joy is having a Scrappy Mystery Quilt-A-Long, and I got the first two parts done, making 9-patches, and HSTS.  


I was also able to finish up my Ella Maria Deacon  blocks for last month.  



What I will be working on for Slow Sunday Stitching will be the next Cassandra's Circle Block, it is all prepped and ready to go. 



Last week, I also finished my Stitcher's Revolution dish towel.


I've got the next one prepped and ready to stitch.

HQAL, Slow Sunday Stitching

My week got off to a great start, I met up with Bernie Kringel @ Needle and Foot to hand off to her the Mercyful Quilt I made during Hands2Help.  We met at a local Starbucks, keeping a social distance of course, but it was so much fun to visit. 

Bernie had someone take a picture while she got a better one outside than I did.  Brought joy to my week getting out of the house!



Time to check in with Hand Quilt Along and Slow Sunday Stitching.  I continue to work on my Stitching Sunshine project and can't show that.

I didn't get too far on the embroidery last week, I think I am at the same place I was.   This was an iron-on by Stitcher's Revolution. 


But today I prepped one of the Ella Maria Duncan blocks, and am ready to applique it down.  I dreaded doing it, and it was not a problem at all.  I still have 2 more blocks to get done so I can be ready for the June blocks coming out shortly.




Another of my favorite plants is back.  This is a trumpet vine, which I have maintained more like a bush.  The hummingbirds and bees love the orange flowers.  It just got the flowers out this week.  




The hydrangeas are hanging in there, even despite our 102-103 degree weather this week.
