Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching

I can't believe another three weeks has flown by since our last Hand Quilt Along.  Since then, I have gotten a few things done.  I finished this Ella Maria Deacon block.

I also finished another Kathy Schmitz One Stitch at a Time blocks.

These week I also had a couple of other finishes by machine.  I finished this block for the Pieces From the Past Sew Along by Melva Loves Scraps.

She gave the instructions to put it together, so I went ahead and put my blocks together.

This will be a gift for my grandson Jaeger who graduates this year, and he is 6'+ , so I am going to add another row of 12 inch blocks to make it longer.  These blocks were originally published in the Kansas City Star Newspaper in the 1930s.  I also have a book of Kansas City Star blocks so I am going to choose 4 more from that.

This week I also got the last row on my Stay at Home Round Robin that was organized by Gail @Quilting Gail.    The prompt this week was to add pinwheels.  I made a few more log cabins from last week, and added to the pinwheels from this week.    This now measures about 64 inches square.

Another one of my slow stitching projects this week has been making hexies.  There is a 100 hexie challenge in 100 days on Instagram and I have been doing a handful each night.  My papers are for 3/4 inch, so they are pretty small.  I had won some charm packs last year and used up one pack.

This week, I will continue working on the hexies, I have a Kathy Schmitz older stitchery to work on, and I am prepping some Ella Maria Deacon blocks to applique.

Sunday, March 7th is a bittersweet day for me.   March 7th was my mother's birthday.  She would have been 89.  My mother died in 1997, so she has been gone a long time.   My mother was 17 when she got married, and I was born when she was 18, 10 months later.  These are a couple of crazy quilt pieces in which I printed the images on silk.

She lived a tough life.  She was born in rural Arkansas in 1932 the youngest of about 7 children.  Her oldest brother was murdered, probably for his paycheck.  Her mother once carried one of the babies to the Dr. which was a number of miles away, and when she got there the baby was dead.  Her mother died when she was 10.  Her father was elderly when she was born, and had mental issues, so she went to live with her oldest sister Eva who was 20 at the time.  She moved to Maryland when she was about 17 which was where she met my dad.  In 1968 while I was in Europe with a religious group, after I had graduated from high school, she contracted the Hong Kong Flu and it went to her kidneys and she got glomerulonephritis.   Because she was out of work so long, the telephone company fired her, and this set her into a tailspin.  I don't know whether she was bipolar or schizophrenic, but there were several times she ended up in mental hospitals for shock therapy.  After that, for the rest of her life she was doped up to help her function.  I have been missing her today.

Anyway, that is it for today.  Thanks for stopping by!

Stay At Home Round Robin, Pieces From the Past

I've been working pretty hard the past couple of days to finish things up.  The first thing was piecing the last round of the Stay at Home Round Robin.  This was coordinated by Gail @Quilting Gail, where all details can be found.  This last round was prompted by Gail, and she asked that we make pinwheels.  I never attached my log cabins last week, I wanted to combine them with this round.  I ended up making 4 more log cabins and 8 pinwheels.  I am really pleased with the way this came out.  Many thanks go out to Gail for coordinating this.  I got to use up an old, old orphan block for the center, and pieced the borders with a lot of my scraps.

The second thing I have worked on this week was to piece this latest block from the Pieces From The Past Sewalong by Melva @Melva Loves Scraps.  These are all blocks that were published in the Kansas City Star in the 1930s.  She gave directions to start putting the top together, so I also put the blocks together.  There will be some later instructions later this month, but I decided I am going to do another row of 12" blocks.  This will be for my grandson Jaeger who graduates in several months, and as he is 6' or taller, it would make a better length for him.   This block was called The Pride of Ohio.

I'll be linking up at Quilting Gail and Melva Loves Scraps.

Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching

Happy Valentines Day everyone!   I am planning to have a shrimp cocktail, split a steak and baked potato with my sweetheart and maybe a piece of cake.

Three weeks has passed again, and time to check in for the Hand Quilt Along.  I have been pretty busy this week with several projects.  I've been working on my project for the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop coming up.

I also was able to get a block done for the Pieces From the Past Sewalong being done by Melva @Melva Loves Scraps.

On the slow stitching front, I am still trying to catch up my Ella Maria Deacon blocks.  I was able get three more blocks done.

For my slow stitching this week I will be working on this last EMD block I am behind on.  The new ones come out in three days,.

My Saturday turned into a wonderful day.  I had just wrapped up a package of little goodies for Granddaughter Kyleigh to tell her I was thinking and missing her.  I had it on the bench to take out to the mailbox.  About 5 minutes later, Kyleigh texted me, and told me she was in town, and could she come over to visit.  She apparently flew back home to surprise her dad.  When he was watching a Super Bowl commercial last Sunday got tears in his eyes thinking about Kyleigh.   She apparently has classes all day on Tuesdays, but the rest of the week is free, so she was able to come out on Wednesday last week and is flying back on Monday, and gets to spend Valentine's Day with her boyfriend Drew.  Next week she starts her nursing clinical, and she needed to have regular office clothes to wear instead of scrubs this time, so she and Drew planned to go shopping before she returned.   What a treat to have them visit.

Slow Sunday Stitching

It's been a busy week once again, and time to check in for Slow Sunday Stitching on Kathy's Quilts.

This week I have been trying to catch up.  It is also the end of the quarter for the 2020 Finish-A-Long, and I looked at my list sort of late in the game and realized I am nowhere near close to being finished.

This week I finished another block for the QAL by the Sea, the Mariner's Compass designed by Kathleen McMusing.

It was paper pieced, and not as bad as I thought it would be.  Paper piecing is not my favorite thing to do.  It looks pretty good with the other blocks for this section.

I also got my Ella Maria Deacon blocks done for last month.  This also included a paper pieced block!

I also got the newest block done for the Pieces From the Past Sewalong on Melva Loves Scraps.  This block is called the Rolling Stone, and was published in 1936 in the Kansas City Star.  This will be my grandson Jaeger's graduation quilt next year.

This week also found me adding some patches on Jaeger's letterman jacket.  I told him last week I didn't think I could go down any further on this sleeve, but I did manage to add one more star on, plus on swimming guy.  He said there might be one more star at the end of the year.  I think it might need to be glued on.

I also managed to put a border on this scrap quilt I made during the Star Kissed Quilt Along @Wedding Dress Blue several months ago.  I didn't have enough of the pirate fabric for all four borders, so I added some leftover sailboat blocks to the corners, and cut out some sea creatures with my Accuquilt die.  This will be my One Monthly Goal for October to quilt this.   A former roommate and bridesmaid of my younger daughter Katie is having a baby boy anytime this month.   I plan to try some of my FMQ skills I am learning on the FMQ Academy at String and Story with HollyAnne Knight.  I also am going to try out my newly returned Juki that has been on an extended stay in Texas for warranty work.

What I will be working on for my Slow Sunday Stitching will be my Cassandra's Circle block for September, and maybe stitching on this little redwork piece.

I'll be linking up at Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.    Head on over there and see what everyone is up to!

Yesterday was grandson Keaton's BD and we had a family dinner at Spaghetti Factory.

I've had some lovely things to look at in my garden this week.   This plan, a dahlia I had planted in my new garden out front several months ago.  This was in a pot in my backyard for at least 8-9 years, and never bloomed.  In fact all it ever had was leaves and I wasn't sure what it was.  I usually only buy plants that have flowers, so it was a mystery until this happened!  It grew huge, and bloomed!

I have also had some beautiful sunflowers happening.

Lastly I have been having a heck of a time with critters around here.  I have had a mole problem for at least two years.  First in the back yard, then they moved to the front.  I have tried these stake things you put batteries in and it is supposed to drive them off, I have tried bait which they push out of the holes.  I have tried to drown them with water down their holes.  They moved to the front yard about a month ago, and they are going crazy and making me crazy,  I think there must be a whole commune. I have even tried Siracha and castor oil.  I just wish they would leave!  I would welcome any suggestions!

The past month or so, I have been trying to clean up my gardens, trim bushes, and get ready for the winter, and when we hopefully get our rain.  I cleaned out this area, trimmed back some bushes, and lavender, gotten old leaves out, planted some sunflowers, and put down some fresh bark, really fine stuff.  We have a circular driveway, and this area is between the driveway and sidewalk.  We have a 3 acre park across the street, where a bunch of wild turkeys live.

The turkeys usually make their rounds each day around the neighborhood.  Today I found about 5 of them out there sitting in my bark, swishing their tails around like they were getting comfortable, leaving big mounds and indentations in the bark, plus finding a bunch of bark in the driveway.  I ran them off, but I am sure they will be back tomorrow!

Well that is all for today.  I have had to put in comment moderation, as I found about 50 spam messages in various posts this morning, all from the same entity, Apna Showroom which is on Amazon.  It took me awhile this evening to delete them all.  They come across as a no-reply commenter.  They did all this in about 10 minutes this morning!

Thanks for stopping by!

HQAL, Slow Sunday Stitching

Another three weeks has passed since we last checked in for the Hand Quilt Along.  I have finished a number of hand projects.

I finished the Kathy Schmitz stichery.

I finished the EPP'd block from the Pieces From the Past Stitch Along @ Melva Loves Scraps.

Right now for hand stitching, and what I will be working on for Slow Sunday Stitching are this tea towel designed by Stitcher's Revolution.   My sister is a wine drinker, and this is the third tea towel I am making for her for Christmas.

Also I'll be working on the Ella Maria Deacon blocks for this month.  I did finish one hand applique.

On Sunday, I will be working on this next one.

Be sure and visit the other Hand Quilt Along Links below to see what others have been up to.

Last Sunday, daughter Katie and I went to our hairdresser's who has been working out of her garage.  We got a picture after we had our hair done,

Katie's birthday was on Monday, and I finished quilting this quilt for her gift.   It was a Partners in Design QAL from 2018.  Katie loves owls, so I thought this would be perfect for her.  She loved it!

This was actually Katie and her kids on her birthday.

I had these two grandchildren, John and Klara on Thursday and Friday home-schooling.   They have been home schooling at my other daughter's house this whole Covid mess, and their cousin Keaton has been watching them this summer at his house.  Since Kristen was back helping granddaughter Kyleigh moved into her dorm, they asked me to take over so there would be adult supervision.

Also this week I did two more blocks of the Quilt Along by the Sea by Partners in Design.  I think I like the turtle the best.  The sun was supposed to have eyes and a smile, but I just pieced those in another shade of yellow.  I really didn't like the original version.  I might change his eyes and put some shades on, still deciding.

Thanks for stopping by, and hope you have a nice, safe week.

Slow Sunday Stitching

It's been another busy week, amid the heat, and fires, and smoke of Northern California.   While we do not have any imminent fires around us, the skies have been brown since last week, there has been ash falling from the sky and smoke so bad I need to wear a mask to mow and water outside.   The nearest fires right now are probably 30-50 miles away.

I've accomplished a lot this week, despite having a migraine a whole day due to the smoke.  This is last week's block for the Pieces From the Past Sewalong by Melva @ Melva Loves Scraps.  This one is called Indiana Star.  It was published in the Kansas  City Star July 21, 1937.

I also finished two blocks for the QAL by the Sea.  This one was designed by Jennifer Fulton @The  Inquiring Quilter.

This week's block was designed by April Adams @Janda Bend Quilts.

I also finished last month's block of Cassandra's Circle BOM by Barbara Brackman @ Civil War Quilts.

I took a picture of all the blocks together and realized the block on the far right, with the purple mulberries was out of character with the rest of the blocks, which are mostly blue.  Hard to see in this poor light.   But I took those purple mulberries off and replaced with some blue ones.

Lastly I finished the quilting on this fall quilt for my daughter's birthday on Monday.  It was a Partners in Design QAL from 2 years ago.  My daughter loves owls, so I thought this would be perfect for her.

So for Slow Sunday Stitching this week I will be working on a new tea towel.  I finished the chocolate one.

I got this new transfer pack from Stitchers Revolution.

I've got this wine one ready to stitch for my sister.

I'll be linking up with Slow Sunday Stitching on Kathy's Quilts.  Head on over and check out what everyone has been up to.
