Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching

It's been another non-stop busy week. After I showed my brother's quilt last week, they called concerned it would not go far enough over the sides to cover their mattress and blankets. They said a plain border on the sides would be fine, as they wanted the center part with the lighthouses to be the star. I needed to add about 16 inches total. So I took off the top and bottom and added navy blue border all around. It now measures 115 in length and 110 in width. This is on my king sized bed, and it goes down the sides plenty.

Wednesday was our guild Community Service Day to pin baste quilts. I was talking to one of the ladies in attendance, and I told her I needed to piece the backing for this huge quilt. She made a suggestion that a panel might be used. I looked again through my nautical stash and found one that would work, and finished piecing the back. I will take it over to the longarm quilter next week.

This week my grandkids went back to school. John started middle school and Klara started 3rd grade.

Thursday I got up bright and early and cleaned my house, as Friday my mini quilt group was meeting at my house. And I spent the afternoon with my friend Jandra whom I made the Boho bag for. We went to lunch at Leatherby's, a local family owned ice cream parlor that just opened in her town. There is a vintage shop open in her town also that is open only certain days a month, and Thursday was one of those days. I found a cute top for $12 and a children's nursery rhyme book for my friend who is having a baby in September.

This week I also cut out sawtooth stars on my Accuquilt. I have the 8 inch cube. I am making another bath quilt. When the scrap metal guys came over several months ago, they had a new granddaughter, and requested an elephant baby quilt in purple. I found a cute baby elephant panel, and the first round will be the sawtooth stars. I fussy-cut some other little baby elephants for the centers.

When my mini group came over on Friday, I had a chance to get quite a bit done on the Peter Rabbit block.

Slow Sunday Stitching

Another busy week has whizzed by. It continues to be blazing hot in Northern California. It was relatively cooler Saturday morning and I was out picking the blasted morning glory weed out of my garden, enjoying my tunes, when my neighbor behind me had someone taking out cement or something with very loud machinery. Sort of took my mood away, plus there was some sort of dust coming over the fence, hope to get more done this week.

I did pick two Dahlias that just bloomed, before the sun turned them to crispy critters.

The amaranth is getting quite top heavy, I had to attach it to the fence. It popped up randomly out of my brick patio.

This week was guild board meeting on Tuesday and on the way home I stopped by the farmer's market along the way. I had wanted to make some pickles and was able to get some cucumbers and made some Bread and Butter pickles. I used to can all the time, and haven't for a long while. Katie had given me some peaches last week, so I made peach jam. I also made some hot pepper jelly out of the hot peppers I grew, and also some pickled beets, and some roasted tomatoes, out of home grown tomatoes which I froze.

Wednesday I had a crown put on, one of those new one-day crowns. It felt weird, didn't feel like it was my tooth. It sat too high, so it was higher than the other side of my mouth. I went home and after attempting to eat lunch went back over and they filed it down some. When I tried to eat dinner, it was still to high, even if I chewed on the other side of my mouth it hit. I called the next day and when I went in, they had already made a new one that was revised.

When I went in the first day they numbed me up, and then asked me to bite down to make the impression. They figured because I was numbed I probably didn't bite down hard enough. This second one works just fine, no problems. But it was 3 times to the dentist across town.

This week I have also been working on my brother's quilt, and it has been quite the adventure. I attached the top of border of Storm at Sea blocks, and then went to attach the bottom border and I was missing 2 blocks. I could have sworn I made enough for both borders. So I went and scrounged up some more background fabric that would go with what I did so far, and made 1 block, and then realized I hadn't cut out enough pieces for the other block. I looked over on my rolling cart with thread and supplies off to the side of me, and there were the other two blocks. I attached the bottom border and decided to measure the length and see if it was close to where I needed to be, and discovered it was 116 inches way over. I still wanted to add a lighthouse fabric border on all sides. So I took off the bottom border and now it won't be so huge.

This will be the border and probably the backing too.

Last week I finished this Peter Rabbit block for the baby quilt I am working on.

One Monthly Goal, August

It's time to link up a goal for August for One Monthly Goal. My goal for August is to make a Peter Rabbit baby quilt. I want to get at least the top made. It will involve finishing the embroidery of 3 more Peter Rabbit embroideries and constructing the quilt. I downloaded these from free coloring pages. My hope is to get the top done, for a baby shower the end of September.

I completed the first embroidery so far.

One Monthly Goal, July

My One Monthly Goal for July was stated here. It was to finish my granddaughter Kyleigh's quilt. When last seen it looked like this: It was on my Handiquilter Moxie frame.

I quilted most of it and the stitch regulator was acting up. I finished the rest on manual setting, as I had to get a new part from HandiQuilter. I did some quilting around the flowers on my domestic machine, and got the binding and label sewn on, and it has now been gifted to my granddaughter Kyleigh.

Slow Sunday Stitching

This has been another busy week. Wednesday was our guild's work day, at my house. I spent 3 days cleaning my house, working in the yard, and had moved all the furniture to the side of sitting room/dining room so we could set up tables to work on. We had 7 people in all. Two ladies were sewing labels on completed quilts, one lady was cutting out binding, and another was calculating how much the quilted quilts needed. Then three of us were matching up backings with tops and cutting batting. When done we put them in a bag with the binding and a label. In two weeks we will have a pin-basting day at the community center across the street from me.

I was also able to get 6 more Storm at Sea blocks done for my brother's lighthouse quilt. These when added to ones I had already done will go on the top and bottom of the quilt. Then I will figure out what I need to do to finish this in to a king sized quilt.

Saturday I was invited to an all day scrapbooking day with a friend from the guild. The last time I attended I had started scrapbooking my trip to Europe from 1968. I attended the Baptist World Youth Conference in Bern, Switzerland with a friend from church. It was a 21 day trip through 7 countries. The original photo book I had put them in was falling apart, they were in those plastic sleeves. We were to report back to our church on the sights we had seen on our return trip. I had written in a notebook our day to day sightseeing. So Friday I spent typing up my notebook, and researching what I had written down, because parts of it were spelled wrong, etc. The last time I went was from 10-2 and I got 2 pages done. I wasn't very prepared.

This time I was prepared and took most of the supplies I needed. The event on Saturday was 10 a.m. to midnight but I left at 7 p.m. because my bad knee was acting up. But I was able to get 9 pages done this time. But it was a fun day, and I was so happy I was better prepared this time.

Last week I also gifted my granddaughter Kyleigh with her graduation quilt. She was thrilled with it.

I also gave my friend Jandra her Boho bag and she was also thrilled

This week for Slow Sunday Stitching I will be working on the sunflower quilt. I haven't gotten much done since last seen.

I also will be tracing out these Peter Rabbit blocks to embroider. I had a pattern before but I think I might have given it away. After searching everywhere 3 times, I downloaded these Peter Rabbit free coloring pages.

I received a baby shower invitation to a former coworker's baby shower in September. I noticed on the registry list she had several items with Peter Rabbit on it. The baby is a girl. So I decided to make a Peter Rabbit quilt. I have some pink toile with Peter Rabbit on it, I think I have enough for the backing.

This was included in the invitation.

UFO Blog Hop Starts Today, My Day

I'd like to thank Joan from Moosestash Quilting for the challenge of finishing a UFO, or something along an alien theme. I have plenty of UFO's (unfinished objects) and was happy for this challenge. I chose to finish two projects. A list of the entire schedule is below.

The first project I decided to finish was my friend Jandra's Boho Bag. I had had it at this stage for several months, the front of the bag partially embellished. Jandra loves Minnie Mouse, so that was the theme.

I finished embellishing it first. And added the lace, beads and fringe around the front flap.

I added doilies for pockets to the lining

The finished back and front.

I delivered it to her on Friday and she loved it. She even has it displayed in her living room.

The second project I finished was my granddaughter Kyleigh's graduation quilt. She graduated in May from nursing school in Boston. I sort of had this mostly quilted when my Handiquilter Moxie decided to start doing some creative long stitches. I took it off the frame and ended up finishing the quilting on my domestic machine while I was being sent a new part for the stitch regulator. I gifted it to her this weekend. The quilt was called Flourishes designed by Piece of Cake Designs.
