Slow Sunday Stitching

It was relatively easy week last week, I only had a board meeting to attend on Tuesday.  I was still not feeling like stitching  or doing anything other than some yard work.  I spent several days going to thrift stores and Big Lots.  I was looking for umbrellas for my yard, and outdoor plant stands or baker's rack for my plants.  My neighbors recently took some trees down that shaded my side yard and shaded some of my outdoor plants, as they put in a pool.  I bought an umbrella for my patio table and had it up shading my plants, and the wind blew it over, including my patio table.  So I ended up getting a larger umbrella, with a heavier stand.  I think I need my grandson's help to set it up though.  The last few days it has been raining so the plants should be OK until I get the umbrella set up.   I only last fall planted trees in my back yard, so they aren't really shade producing yet.  

With the new onset of rain the past several days, my plants are looking good.

Friday and Saturday granddaughter Kyleigh came over.  About two years ago, she started a t-shirt quilt when she was on vacation from school.  Basically she cut out the t-shirts and ironed the stabilizer on a number of shirts.  So this time she cut out more T-shirts and stabilized them, and actually sewed them into rows.  She has more t-shirts she is going to use for the back of the quilt when she finds them.   Several months ago she moved out into her own place, and her other bag of T-shirts is missing right now.    I was so proud of how much she got done those two days.  Friday I made BLTs for lunch.  Saturday Kyleigh made some yummy chicken pesto sandwiches and they were even still warm when she got  here! 

These t-shirts comprise her years of swimming competitively, cheer, the one with the 10 on it was from her 10th birthday and all the attendees of her party signed it.  

While Kyleigh was here I found my mojo again and got a number of things accomplished.  I finished this top for  my guild's Community Service.  Someone had donated these jar blocks and I assembled it into a top.

I finished the Clue 4 on the Scrap Dance Quadrille Mystery by Carole at From My Carolina Home.  

I cut out a bunch of blue strips for the Winter Blues wedding quilt I am making.  These are for the pieced border.  I have 21 more blocks to make.

I finished 3 more of the Ella Maria Deacon blocks done.  

This is the last one left to do, and I don't know whether to piece it by hand, or paper piece.  Paper piecing is not my forte.  

On Saturday I had intended to make the rest of the border blocks for the Winter Blues quilt.  But then a either a "squirrel" caught my attention, or DrEAMI (Drop Everything and Make It) happened.  

I kept seeing Susan Nixon @DesertSky Quilting making potato chip blocks.  You can find the tutorial for making these blocks by Brenda @Conquering Mt. Scrapmore on You Tube.

So Saturday instead of finishing my Winter Blues border I was cutting out 2.5 x 4.5 inch rectangles to make the potato chip blocks.  At Christmas time I had used my scrap rectangles as packing of some Christmas gifts I sent away to quilting friends, including Susan Nixon.  I got 5 made, and my second one I goofed up by putting an an extra row on both sides.

May One Monthly Goal

 

My One Monthly Goal for May is to quilt and bind my Apple Core quilt which is a UFO from the late 1990's when I was a new quilter.  It sat in the closet since then with 5 rows sewn, but not together.  I finished the top for the Little Green Apples Blog Hop in March.  You can read about it here.  This will be a gift for my son-in-law Jeff, who doesn't have a lap quilt to call his own.

Slow Sunday Stitching

This week was a slower pace than recent ones.  The first part of the week I spent cleaning house and working in the yard in preparation for Community Service work day at my house.    I had some turkey visitors this week, they were busy checking out my yard when I was trying to water the front section.  Weather has been in the high 80's to 90's this week, so maybe they were trying to cool off.  

After the community service workday at my house, I got my sewing things back out in the kitchen and dining room.   But then I didn't feel like doing anything.  

I just sort of took it easy the rest of the week, dreading Saturday the second anniversary of John's death.  I read several books and did some puzzles on my I-pad.    I did work a bit on my Ella Maria Deacon blocks and finished one block and started another.  

Saturday daughter Katie and granddaughter Katie came over and spent the day with me.  We did some retail therapy at our favorite nursery.  I purchased some more flowers, and pieces for my drip irrigation units.  I found two of my units shooting water straight up in the air.  So hopefully I purchased the right parts.  We had lunch at a favorite cafe.   We also went over to daughter Kristen's house later on,  as Katie and Klara had not met the new pup Hank yet..

Kristen, SIL Jeff and I went out for frozen yogurt afterwards.   They had all sorts of toppings to use.  Next week one of the flavors is going to be banana pudding.  

For Slow Sunday Stitching this week I will be working on my Ella Maria Deacon blocks.  I have one half done and another prepared.  I will be linking up with Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.

Slow Sunday Stitching

It's been a particularly busy week, but I knew it would be.  

Sunday I went over to my older daughter's house to see my new grandpuppy.  His name is Hank and he is so cute.  Piggy, the pug runs around barking at him, wanting Hank to play with him.  In fact Hank wore Piggy out the other day, Piggy decided to hide behind Jeff, my SIL to rest!  There are actually 4 dogs, but Daisy was apparently not captured on the second picture.  

This week I had Begonia Society meeting, and was one of the ones in charge of refreshments.

The next day, Wednesday was our guild meeting.  At guild meeting they had a selection of panels we could choose from.  The purpose is to make quilts or tops for our Community Service.   A number of our members got up and showed examples of how you could take a panel and add on to it to make a quilt, adding various blocks etc., instead of just adding plain borders. If we liked a panel we could purchase it for $5.  I got 3 panels and paid for 2.

I'm thinking about keeping the middle one, or maybe the last one.  Maybe I'll give all of them to Community Service.  We have until October to finish, bring in a top or finished quilt.  If you bring in a finished quilt you are eligible for some sort of prize.

Thursday evening was for setting up the quilt show.  I signed up to check the quilts, and then helped place them on the rods they were going to be hung up on.

Friday I worked in various positions from Community Service Table to our Community Service Raffle Table.  The opportunity quilt was called Bed of Roses.  It had been started by a woman who passed away and was donated to our guild who finished it.  It was a gorgeous quilt, but I didn't win!

Saturday my assignment was to help catch the quilts as they came down, fold them up and put in alphabetical order by the name of the members and getting their quilts ready to be picked up.

One of my mini-group members, Nancy Johnson was the Featured Quilter this year.  I decided to sit with her all day Saturday and keep her company.  Nancy is a very prolific quilt, and I love her applique quilts, especially the one sitting behind her.  It is a queen sized fall quilt she designed herself.  In fact she designs most all of her quilts.  Last year she donated 43 quilts to Community Service, and this year so far I think she has done 12-14.  These are just some of Nancy's quilts.

My daughters and granddaughter had an opportunity to come over on Friday and see the quilts I entered below.

I look forward to a bit quieter week, although I need to give my house a good cleaning.  Community Service ladies meet at my house on Wednesday for cutting batting and binding.  I look forward to working outside.  We are getting into the 80's, and because of all the rain we have gotten recently , I have tons of weeds.  

My wisteria is looking really pretty, as is this Cymbidium orchid.  

What I will be working on this week for Slow Sunday Stitching is one of my Ella Maria Deacon blocks.  I have 3 applique blocks to applique, and 2 pieced blocks and I can start putting this together.  After John passed away, I sort of set this aside, but I am ready to finish it up now.  I worked on this while I was sitting with Nancy our Featured quilter. 

I am also still working on this Kathy Schmitz stitch along.
