Slow Sunday Stitching

It was another busy week.  This week I had board meeting.  The sensor light came on for my tires and I went and had them filled.  The next day the light came on again as I was driving.  I sent to a tire place and they told me that 4 of my sensors were out and needed replaced at the tune of $100 each.  I asked SIL Jeff what I should do and he suggested the tire place across from his used car lot.  I found out that actually 2 of my sensors are out, and I have a bubble in one of my less than 2-year-old tires.  So I head back over on Monday to get the problem fixed.  

Friday afternoon-evening I worked helping setting up for our annual Begonia Show.  I pretty much worked until I dropped.  I also came home with 6 new begonias.

I didn't think to take pictures of the show plants, but I will when I work on Sunday.    I didn't put anything in the show this year because of my problem with mealybugs and the ones that were outside that had heat damage.  I did hear from one of the clerks that helped the judges that 2 of the plants in the show had to be taken out because they were infested with mealy bugs, and they probably would have one first places.  

This week I worked on a mat for my sewing machine with pockets.  I watched a You Tube video with Jenny with Missouri Star for the directions.  

This week I have picked up my Ella Maria Deacon blocks again.  This was a BOM I was working on through Sentimental Stitches several years ago.  After my husband passed away two years ago, I stopped working on it.  I had 84/85 blocks done.  This is my last block I need to do.  It is a paper-pieced block, and I am lousy at paper-piecing.  If there was a simple way I could applique it, I would.  

I'm going to a quilt retreat soon, and my co-chair of Community Service loves to do paper piecing and is going to help me through this.  I tried again this week 4--5 times, and have set it aside for now. 

I also discovered, in putting my blocks together that this one I had already finished was wonky and would not lay flat.  So I started over 3 times.  Gay from Sentimental Stitches suggested hand-piecing the center, and then adding the sides and corners.  I tried machine piecing the whole thing, and that didn't work.  I tried taking blocks apart and trying to do it better.

I finally did manage to make it again, that sort of lies flat.  

On Instagram #100hexies100days2023, this week's theme was "Pawsome", so I went through mostly my 30's stash and found fabrics.  

What I will be working on for Slow Sunday Stitching is hand-quilting my sunflower quilt.  It has been sitting in a chair in my living room looking at me for months.  I am starting to feel guilty.  I'll work on it till I have another applique project prepped.  Another thing I have set aside since John passed away is my applique which brings me great joy.

Slow Sunday Stitching

I've kept busy this week, even though I only had one social activity.  

Tuesday I had sprinklers put in my front section.  I have a circular driveway, and in front of the driveway is a semicircular section that I have moved a hose around every 12 minutes to water the whole thing for 45 years.  Last week I arranged for the landscaping guy that took out my lawn last year to connect sprinklers to this area.  Last year they put a tube over to this area, but nothing was connected up.  So this week they put in 4 sprinkler heads, and also put in 4 shrubs.   I had spent the days prior to their coming cleaning up this area.  I had Gazanias growing over into the driveway so I cleared that area back so they could install the tubing drip tubing.  They planted 2 gardenias, a Chinese fringe flower, 2 Leafy spurge, Japanese pittosporum.   This area is looking so much better since the sprinklers were installed.  

I also got this from the landscaper.  He was selling off his stock of bushes at 25% off.  

It's called Acuba japonica or Spotted Laurel.  They said it was very temperamental, needed shade, and should be in a pot.  

The Dish Plate Hibiscus that is planted next to this is blooming.

Last week I finished quilting the Sunbonnet Sue quilt that I finished up for one of our deceased members.  She had prepared the sunbonnets, ironed them to freezer paper and the fabric, and I attached them to the backgrounds and quilted it.  Wednesday was our 5th Wednesday workday at our guild.  We meet in a church for about 5 hours, and either piece for community service or quilt one of our small basted quilts.  I gave the Sunbonnet Sue to one of our members that likes to put on bindings.  

This week I also spent a day working on my indoor plants, transplanting some things.  When I was having the mealybug pandemic in my house, I cut them back to their rhizomes, sprayed them with mealybug killer, and planted them in a takeout container with perlite and peat moss, moistened them, and put the lids on and left them for 2 months.  I checked them after a month and sprayed them again.  The leaves came back and I repotted them this week.  I saved 3 plants.  

This week on the #100hexies100days2023 on Instagram, this week's theme was rainbows, hosted by @sewfoxymama.  

I'm going to be heading off to a quilt retreat in a couple of weeks.  I wanted to make a few things.  The last time I went to day camp quite a few quilters had cute little thread catcher and pincushions, and mats for their machines.  So I wanted to make some for myself.  

I finished this thread catcher/pincushion.  This was a pattern by Curry Bungalow that I got here.  

What I will be working on for Slow Sunday Stitching is the last piece of embroidery on the Blessings quilt. This was a project I started well over 20 years ago with a group of internet friends.  Instructions came in 4 pamphlets and I completed the first section of the quilt.

I'm working on this last week, and I can begin to assemble the other 3/4 of the quilt.  I'm hoping to prep a section or two to take to retreat with me.

HQAL, Slow Sunday Stitching

 This was a busy week, but not as busy as it could have been.  Community Service workday was cancelled at my house, due to basting day being cancelled next month, due to guild meeting being moved up next month to basting day, due to our quilt camp at the end of the month in September at Zephyr Cove in Lake Tahoe.  

This week was the Call Me Crazy Challenge hosted by Joan @Moosestash Quilting.   My day was here, where I showed my crazy quilting projects.  

Tuesday night I went with my daughters' friends, and my granddaughter Kyleigh to celebrate daughter Katie's birthday.  We had a really nice dinner at Yard House.  We always get pictures afterwards.  

This week, since I had some free time, I worked on finishing up the Sunbonnet Sue top.  The Sunbonnet Sue pieces had been prepared by a recently deceased member of our guild.  Her daughter donated some of her UFO's to our guild.  I sewed the Sunbonnet Sues onto the background by machine.  I have it loaded up on my longarm to quilt.  My plan is to have it done by this coming Wednesday as we are having a guild workday from 9-2.  If I get it done by Wednesday I can give it to one of the ladies that loves to bind quilts at the workday.  I don't mind doing the binding myself, but I have plenty of other things to work on for community service.  

I have also continued working on the #100hexies#100days2023 on Instagram.  These are what I have done so far.  This next week the theme is paws, not sure I have 7 days worth, but will give it a try.  

Saturday was National Dog Day, and I thought I would show my family's dogs.  Maple is the newest member, she is my granddaughter and her boyfriend's dog.  She is the sweetest dog I have ever seen.  Kyleigh and Maple came and spent a couple of hours with me on Thursday, and we took a nice walk around the park.

Piggy the pug, and Ronald the Chihuahua.

And Daisy the Jack Russell Terrier.  She tends to stay away from the wild boys in the previous picture.  

Saturday we had a potluck at Kyleigh's house to celebrate her birthday with family.  She came to Disneyland with us, but left a day early to go camping at Zion with her boyfriend.  She said she missed us singing Happy Birthday to  her, so we got together and had some great food.

This next week I am going to have a bit more work on my front yard.  The same guy that took out my lawn last year and put in drip irrigation is going to put in sprinklers on the semicircular area in front of my driveway.  I have been moving the sprinkler around various sections every 15 minutes to water the whole area for over 40 years.  He is also going to add some other shrubs in the area that has nothing.  I took a bunch of juniper tams out last year and hadn't replanted anything.  

What I will be working on this week for Slow Sunday Stitching will be finishing the binding on this Community Service quilt that someone else donated.  I finished hand-quilting the last two rounds that were already marked by whomever donated it.  I think I was working on this three weeks ago too.

Call Me Crazy Challenge, My Day

 

 

This is my day on the Call Me Crazy Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by the fabulous Joan @Moosestash Quilting.  

Her challenge this time in her words was " to sew something that you wouldn't normally sew or share something you can't believe you sewed. We all know that crazy and scary feeling of wondering what we were thinking, when we started or were in the middle of sewing something out of our comfort zone."

I have lots of crazy things to show and tell today.  

Long, long ago, I had 2 blogs, Ocean4Karrin, which was devoted to family happenings, and my sane quilting.  I started that one in 2006, and it only had 52 posts, I eventually stopped blogging there.

On 2/20/2007 I started a new blog, this one, Karrin's Crazy World to blog about my crazy quilting activities, CQ round robins I was in, Sharon Boggan's Take A Stitch Tuesday , and I participated in CQ Journal Project, where I was making a block a month for a year.   Eventually this was the blog that I did everything on.  

I have always loved crazy quilting, been fascinated with it and love working with it.  When I first started sane quilting, I started collecting books by Judith Baker Montano, her silk embroidery books, her embroidery stitch books.  I had 5 books in all.  

In around 2005 my husband and I were on a Mexican Riviera Cruise.  He came back to the cabin and told me there was good news and bad news.  Good news it was a quilting cruise.  Bad news was I couldn't join in.  That night before dinner we were in the Crows Nest and in another section were the quilters, and they were introducing the teachers and I heard Judith Baker Montano's name mentioned.  The next day at lunch I introduced myself to her and told her I loved her books.  She invited me to see what the class was doing and told me she was teaching at Empty Spools in Asilomar in February.  I went back home and signed up.  This was my first project, which isn't finished yet, but will be one day.  I took all of my books to class and she signed them for me!

I signed up the next year when she was teaching at Empty Spools in Asilomar too.  This was a CQ landscape class.  I love the ocean, love lighthouses, so that was the subject of my landscape.  

The next year Judith said she was coming out with a new book, and she liked to include student pictures in her books, and if we had anything finished, she would like to include it.  So I sent in a picture of this one, and I am published!

My friend Patricia Winters once had a blog, that is no longer, but she created these Boho Bags.  I made about 7 of these, 3 for me, and 2 for my granddaughter, and a couple for other people.

I have also made small pouches and purses in crazy quilting.

I had noticed at one of Judith Baker Montano's classes in her displays of work she had done, she had a family CQ.  Each member had their own block.  I really liked that idea.  So in 2012 I decided to participate in the CQ Journal project, and each month would make a different block featuring family members.

This was one from my childhood.  I am the big girl, about 12 or so with a scowl on my face.   My mother got me this ugly red bathing suit that didn't fit right, and my sister got a cute pink suit with lace on it.

I really need to get busy and start making blocks again.  My girls are in their 40's, and I have 5 grandchildren that need their own blocks.  So much to do, so little time!
