Day Twelve of the Twelve Days of Christmas In July Blog Hop

Welcome to day 12 of Sarah's 12 Days of Christmas In July Blog Hop.  Many thanks to Sarah for allowing me to participate.

Christmas is my favorite time of year.  I love making gifts for my family, and I love baking cookies and making candy for my friends and family.  I like to find things I can fill my family's stockings with.

One year I made mug rugs and bowl cozies for everyone.  Recently Angie Padilla came out with a gnome mug rug.    I love gnomes and grabbed the pattern.  I belong to her club, so I got it for free, but you can purchase it here.

Recently I purchased some designs at Embroidery Designs.com and stitched out some tea towels.  These will probably go in stockings this year.  I have a few more to make.

I love the one that says "sometimes you just have to say Cluck It and walk away".

One year I made everyone a microwave potato bag.  These work really well, especially if you are single or live alone and only need to cook 1 potato.  The instructions can be found here at The Spruce Crafts.

Another thing I do every year is make my grandkids a new pillowcase, themed to something they have an interest in.  I have heard that one of my grandsons will not use any but the ones I make.  These are the ones I made last year.

My other favorite thing to do at Christmas is make cookies and candy.    I recently found a recipe for Six Minute Caramels,  by Easy Tried Recipes that you make in the microwave. I have made these multiple times and they are so easy and so good.

I found another recipe, Vanilla Cream Filled Caramels by One Sweet Mama, I haven't tried it yet, but it looks good.

Thanks for joining me on the 12th Day of the 12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop.  Let Sarah @ Confessions of a Fabric Addict know how much you appreciate her putting this hop together, and for the great quilt she has shared with us!

Last year with Christmas money I received I bought some new dies for my Accuquilt cutter.  One of them happened to be a gnome die, which I had not used yet.  I have been making my daughters and granddaughter cushion covers which they can change with the seasons.  So I decided to make new ones with the gnome die.  My one daughter came over and requested a girl gnome too, so I made some hair for the girls.

Apparently I have been on a gnome kick, and had gotten these little cutouts of some gnomes.  Last year Joy, @ Days Filled With Joy offered a pattern for a hexagon table topper.  I used that pattern for a couple of table toppers.

I have been collecting a lot of Pinterest ideas regarding gnomes too.  I found these gnome ornaments, and I made a bunch of these.  They are so cute.  I had some other things I had planned to make, but still waiting for supplies which haven't arrived yet.   I found this ornament at Ruffles and Rain Boots.  These are supposed to be just glue gun assembled.  Since I flunked Glue Gun 101 and burn myself  frequently, I did sew my hats, instead of gluing them, to reduce my burned fingers.    I plan to put these in my family's stockings.

Hope you have had as much fun in this blog hop as I have.  Be sure and visit the others above, and Sarah's daily quilt along steps @ Confessions of a Fabric Addict.

Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching

Another three weeks has flown by, and it is time to report in again for the Hand Quilt Along.  I spent most of that time working on my 12 Days of Christmas in July Project.  You can see that post here.  I spent about a week (except the 2 days a week I have been watching my grandchildren)  getting the machine embroidered motifs done.  I had a few snafus and I kept having to start over.  Then I spent the next week and a half hand-embroidering the crazy quilt pieces.

My sister asked me several years ago to make her a tree skirt, and I finally got it done.  I'm going to give it to her for her birthday later this month, then she will have it in time for Christmas.

This is the finished tree skirt.  I still need to add some snaps at the back and it will be ready to go.  Hard to get a good picture.  Too bright outside, and too dark inside.

After I got that project done, I started working on some of my Kathy Schmitz stitcheries.  I belong to the One Stitch at a Time Club and I am working these bird ones up for a wallhanging for one of my daughters for Christmas.  I finished the first one, and started on the second one.

This Hand Quilt Along is an opportunity for hand quilters and piecers to share and motivate one another. We post every three weeks, to show our progress and encourage one another.  If you have a hand quilting project and would like to join our group contact Kathy at the link below.

12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop, My Day and 2 Giveaways

Welcome to My Day of the 12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop, hosted by the Amazing Sarah of Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  I do appreciate all she does to put on this blog hop.

When I was invited to participate in this blog hop again this year, I jumped at the chance and knew exactly what I wanted to do.  My sister had suggested several years ago that she would like a Christmas Tree Skirt.  Several years ago I had purchased some Christmas designs for my embroidery machine and never had a chance stitch them out, and wanted to incorporate those into a tree skirt.

This is my finished skirt.

I went looking on Pinterest for tree skirts, and finally decided on this one by Newton Custom Interiors, mainly because she gave the dimensions, and has a tutorial on how to make the tree skirt.  About the only thing I used was the dimensions to make the pattern.  I made the pattern with paper, and traced it on a piece of muslin and cut it out about an inch bigger around the sides of the pattern. The reason for me doing this was after I stitched out my Christmas designs i was going to crazy piece the rest of the unit, and they might shrink after embroidering seams.  I love, love, love crazy quilting and haven't done it in several years and it was so heavenly to be back at it.

I started embroidering my Christmas motifs on my machine and ran into a couple of snafus.  For a good laugh here are a couple of them.

This one got a tangle of threads underneath, and when I tried to cut them loose, the whole throat plate came off.

This one apparently got out of syc from the last mess and was sewing things in the wrong places.  I figured it out when it put his eyes and hair and beard on top of his head.

I was finally able to get the 8 motifs embroidered and I started crazy piecing the units.  I spent the next two weeks embroidering these units by hand.

I'll show my finished units. and explain the process below on something simpler.

I assembled all the units and added a backing and binding for the top.  I was going to add batting but it was going to be too much.  Crazy quilting is not generally quilted.

I also decided to have a giveaway on my blog, a little crazy quilted stocking ornament, and I will show how I made that.  I had a lot of scraps leftover from my project and decided to use those.

1.  I drew out a stocking outline on a piece of muslin for a base.  My first piece of fabric I always just randomly cut a 5 sided piece and place it on the muslin.

2.  I place the next piece of fabric along one of the edges and sew along that edge.  Don't go any further than the piece you are covering. I sew along that edge, and flip it back.

3.  Just keep going around in a circle until you have covered the entire shape (plus a little beyond).  That shape on the muslin is what I am going to cut out.

3.  When I have made the rounds once, I trim up the edges so there is a 5 sided shape again.  And just keep going until you have filled in the whole shape.  The stocking shape is sort of lost.  I trimmed it up again so I have the shape I want to end up with

4.  Next comes the embellishment, lace, braid, stitches.  There are lots of good resources out there.  Sharon Boggan has an online Stitch Dictionary here.   I have been crazy quilting for over 20 years, and have multiple books by Judith Baker-Montano, my favorite the Embroidery and Crazy Stitch Tool, Foolproof Crazy Quilting by Jennifer Clouston, Crazy Quilt Stitches by Dorothy Bond, and many others.

5.  After I did my stitching, I just added a backing, and I did add a piece of batting.

This is the finished stocking ornament.  I am offering this as my giveaway.  You can enter to win by leaving a comment.  If you are a no-reply blogger and would like to be entered, I will need an email to contact the winner.  I will randomly choose a winner on July 30th.
