Good Fortune Mystery Monday Link-up , Mail Surprise

This was the first year I participated in Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery which this year was called Good Fortune.   The pattern can now be purchased as a digital pattern at the Quiltville store here.

I had my top completed within a week of the reveal in early January and decided to donate my top to the Carolina Hurricane Quilt Project.  You can find out more about that here at From My Carolina Home.  I contacted Carole and she hooked me up with a longarmer who graciously quilted my quilt.

I received a picture of the finished quilt this week, and was so happy to see it quilted, and on its way to being donated to one of the hurricane victims.  Irene did a lovely quilting with my top, and her friend the binding.  I really appreciate the time and effort she spent finishing up my top.

I went out to the mail this afternoon and found a squishy filled with Island Batik widths of fabric  that I won from Wednesday Wait Loss at the Inquiring Quilter.  Thanks so much Jennifer, I really appreciate it.  It is so exciting to get squishies in the mail.

Good Fortune Mystery Finish

Since the reveal of the Bonnie Hunter's Good Fortune Mystery last week, I have been working hard to get it together.  I decided when I was about halfway through putting this together to donate the top to the Carolina Hurricane Quilt Project, being coordinated by Carole at From My Carolina Home.  

When this hurricane was first developing, I was back in Boston taking granddaughter Kyleigh to college.  My brother-in-law Roger was here helping care for my husband while I was gone. By the time I got back home 5 days later, Roger was anxious to get back home to North Carolina before they cancelled flights.  It took the airlines 2 days before they decided to allow it, without him paying more.  Roger got home before the hurricane hit land, and decided to stay in place instead of evacuating.  He was without power 4 days I think.  I was worried about him the entire time.  

So I decided to donate it to the Carolina Hurricane Project.  I sent it off to the longarmer in North Carolina this morning who has graciously offered to quilt it.  

I had a great time with my first Bonnie Hunter Mystery.  I decided to put plain fabric in for the third border as the strip pieced units I made were fragile, mainly because I forgot to shorten my stitch, and when I started pulling my paper out, they started coming apart.   I didn't want to start over as I have other projects I need to get done this month.  Also I have decided I need a remedial course in counting, as I was missing some units!

My quilt is made probably 80% of Civil War reproduction fabrics.  The oranges were what I did not have a lot of in that line.  The sun finally came out yesterday so I could take some pictures.

Good Fortune Mystery, Clue 6

Wanted to get my Clue 6 done this week early for the Good Fortune Quiltville Mystery Quilt..

I've been busy getting my goals ready for the 2019 Finish-A-Long.  There are a number of global hosts, but I usually hook up at Marci Girl Designs. You can see all the global hosts on her blog.  Each quarter you make a list of  things you would like to finish.  I've also been trying to get the last redwork design on my 2018 Quarter 4 list done.  I am right down to the wire on this, but I think I can get it done tonight.

Good Fortune Mystery, Part 5

Good Fortune Mystery, Part 4

Part 4 of the Good Fortune Mystery came out on Friday.  I was able to make about 1/2 my blocks, before I had to get going on Christmas surprises.  This week it was string pieced blocks.  

These are the  strings on my sewing table.

These are my finished blocks.  While I am using mostly Civil War Repros, I didn't have many oranges so I had to get some other fabrics from my stash.

Good Fortune, Part 3

I've been working on the Good Fortune Mystery by Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville.

I started out well and followed the instructions/diagrams on 1/4 of the units.  

Then the next day I came back and started working on them again, and made 1/4 of them going the wrong way.  But I didn't stop there.

Yesterday I got 1/4 more of these chevron's 1/2 done when I noted my mistake.  And cut out more units.  

Right now, I have 3/4 of the units done and part of my bonus half-square triangles pressed and trimmed.

I still have this big pile to press and trim, but it will have to wait till later.  I have gifts to work on.

My Christmas catcus is blooming nicely.  You can't really tell here, but it has red and white flowers on the same plant!

Good Fortune, Clue 2 Finished, New Ornament

Bonnie Hunter@ Quiltville's new mystery quilt started 2 weeks ago called Good Fortune.  This is the first time I have done one of her mysteries, and I am trying to keep up.

I finished my pieces for Clue 2. Clue 3 comes out Friday, so I am doing better than last week!

I also finished an ornament.  This is from Robin Kingsley's book called Just Be Claus.  I like how it came out.  I am going to give it as part of my Christmas gift to someone at Bunco.

In other news, after struggling with my older Bernina Artista 185 embroidery machine, and trying to download designs with the Artlink software after my laptop died, I was able to contact support at Bernina and they helped me with my problem.  So I will be able to embroider some gifts this year.  So it has been a good week already.  I have been struggling with this issue for several months now.  My laptop was designated for use with the Bernina and was running on XP.  I lost a lot of designs that are on the hard drive.  If I could find the exact same laptop that ran, they could transfer the hard drive to the new machine.  Overall it was an expensive fix.  I'm so happy I can use their new software, and transfer the designs to my machine now.  The first up is going to be a sweatshirt for one of my son-in-laws who owns a used car lot.  I made him one about 13 years ago and he is still wearing the same sweatshirt.

Good Fortune Mystery, Part 1 and 2

Bonnie Hunter @Quiltville Blogspot started her 2018 mystery quilt called Good Fortune on Black Friday.    The link up to Part 2 is here.

I finished my part 1 pieces this week.  There are actually some extras in here.  The majority of my fabric is Civil War repros.  I didn't have any scraps, of repros.  I was cutting into yardage.  I have 4 drawers of these repros, and I am happy to be using them again.

Then I started on Part 2.  I'm about 1/2 way through sewing but I have them all cut out.

Good Fortune, Part 1; Virtual Cookie Exchange

Bonnie Hunter's new mystery quilt, Good Fortune started the day after Thanksgiving here.   I have looked forward to this, as I have never done a mystery quilt, and Bonnie's always are so beautiful.  So I have part of my four-patches done, and will continue working on them throughout the week.

I decided to use mostly my Civil War reproductions, as I have quite a bit, and haven't used them recently.  I am about 1/3 through.
