Show Your Stripes Blog Hop, My Day

Yesterday there were some great projects on the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop.  Many thanks to
Carla @ Creatin in the Sticks and the great blog hops she comes up with!  The list of the full schedule is below.

When I was first contemplating what I would make for this blog hop with stripes, I pulled these fabrics I have with stripes in them.  I was first thinking about cutting these up and making star blocks.

Then I pulled my old quilt books out and found this one.  I made the sailboat quilt last year in this book, and I have always liked this one with the stripes.

I began to make it, and it fought me every inch of the way.  For one thing the pieces of fabric are cut on the bias, and apparently I must have stretched it this way and that stitching it together.  By the time I appliqued the stripes on top it was really wonky.  I had to really trim it down to make it square.

This is the finished product.  I plan to give this for a comfort quilt and I think someone will like it.  I used a stripe for the backing, and pieced together a number of stripes for the binding.

I've always loved using stripes in my quilts.  This is one I designed and made years ago.  I did bluework embroidery on the blocks, and set them in a a crazy quilt like pattern.  I also used two of the boats my husband built in the patterns.  This one has a wavy, stripe border which I love.

Be sure and visit the others on this blog hop, there are some great projects being shown.

Slow Sunday Stitching, Organizing Away

It's been a busy week since last Sunday.  I am satisfied I have had a very good week, getting caught up, and organizing my sewing room.  Actually I am sewing in the kitchen where I can hear John when he wakes, and knocks on the wall.  So right now it is supply room.

If I sew in the room it is on this counter in front of the lamp on the left side.  Last week this counter was completely covered with "stuff" I had set there when I had taken the shelf down and evaluating whether I wanted to keep "stuff" or not.  This is it in its clean and tidy state.

Those three drawers under the counter on the right side are part of my Civil War reproduction stash, sorted by color.  I reorganized them, as it had gotten a bit of a mess.

The rest of my Civil War reproduction stash including neutrals and browns were in a similar drawer in the closet, located behind these containers of cut up scraps on the left.  So every time I wanted one of those fabrics, I would have to move everything to get them.

I decided to put something else in that drawer behind those containers, and put the Civil War neutrals and browns in a container that fits underneath the counter, so they are more accessible.

In cleaning up one of my piles of "stuff" I found my Christmas napkins that had been set aside because they needed ironing.  I finally got that done too!

I also managed to get some sewing done.  I finished this last Ella Maria block.  There are some puckers, but it is staying the way it is.  The newest 4 blocks came out earlier this week.

I also was able to make the news Hands All Around block #2 by Barbara Brackman @ Civil War Quilts.

A private Christmas mystery BOM

In addition, I was getting ready to prep the last 2 Cassandra's Circle blocks by Barbara Brackman, @ Civil War Quilts.  I decided to lay the blocks out on the floor to see what fabrics I would use next, when I discovered I wasn't two blocks behind, but 4 blocks behind.  I probably stopped being able to keep up monthly when John had his problems back in November.

I've got the four months of templates cut out, now just need to prep the blocks.  I will be working on these as my slow stitching project this week.

Also I will be slowly stitching on this One Stitch At a Time block from last year by Kathy Schmitz of this squirrel.

I'll be linking up with Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.    Head on over there and see what everyone has been up to!

Remember Monday is the start of the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop.  My day is on Tuesday.

Stay At Home Round Robin, Round 5

All the information about the SAHRR or Stay at Home Round Robin can be found here at Quilting Gail.

For the fifth round this week, the prompt was for wonky stars was by Wendy @ Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life.

I love wonky stars, but I thought that with last weeks' checkerboard border, I would keep it simple this week with just wonky stars in the corners.

I am trying to leave some blank space as I am currently trying to complete my Free Motion Academy class by HollyAnne Knight.  I started in the fall of last year and want to graduate with the spring session.

So this is this week's addition of wonky stars.

I will be linking up at Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life.

Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching

Happy Valentines Day everyone!   I am planning to have a shrimp cocktail, split a steak and baked potato with my sweetheart and maybe a piece of cake.

Three weeks has passed again, and time to check in for the Hand Quilt Along.  I have been pretty busy this week with several projects.  I've been working on my project for the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop coming up.

I also was able to get a block done for the Pieces From the Past Sewalong being done by Melva @Melva Loves Scraps.

On the slow stitching front, I am still trying to catch up my Ella Maria Deacon blocks.  I was able get three more blocks done.

For my slow stitching this week I will be working on this last EMD block I am behind on.  The new ones come out in three days,.

Check out the other Hand Quilt Along links below.

My Saturday turned into a wonderful day.  I had just wrapped up a package of little goodies for Granddaughter Kyleigh to tell her I was thinking and missing her.  I had it on the bench to take out to the mailbox.  About 5 minutes later, Kyleigh texted me, and told me she was in town, and could she come over to visit.  She apparently flew back home to surprise her dad.  When he was watching a Super Bowl commercial last Sunday got tears in his eyes thinking about Kyleigh.   She apparently has classes all day on Tuesdays, but the rest of the week is free, so she was able to come out on Wednesday last week and is flying back on Monday, and gets to spend Valentine's Day with her boyfriend Drew.  Next week she starts her nursing clinical, and she needed to have regular office clothes to wear instead of scrubs this time, so she and Drew planned to go shopping before she returned.   What a treat to have them visit.

Stay at Home Round Robin, Week 4

Information about the Stay at Home Round Robin can be found @Quilting Gail.  Rather than traveling quilter to quilter as for usual round robins, you keep your quilt at home, and each week one of the designated 7 bloggers gives you a prompt on what to do for the next round.

The new prompt for the Stay at Home Round Robin was posted today by Roseanne & Sue @ Homesewn by Us, which was a checkerboard border.  I was thinking about what fabrics I wanted to pull.   All of a sudden a thought popped in my mind that I had some already sewn red and neutral four patches leftover from  Bonnie Hunter's Good Fortune mystery from a couple of years ago.  This was my version.

I had a baggie full of four patches, they even had pressed, spun seams, ready to stitch.

I had all four sides ready to sew on, when I noticed I had two reds together, so some ripping was done, several times.

This was my finished piece.  It is measuring about 39 inches now.

Will be linking up @Home Sewn by Us.

Stay at Home Round Robin, Round 3

The information about this The SAHRR or Stay at Home Round Robin can be found here at Quilting Gail.

Last week, for round 3, Anja @ Anja Quilts suggested that we put flying geese on our round.

I really liked the migrating flying geese that Emily @The Darling Dogwood put on her round 3, and I ordered the technique sheet from Deb Tucker's Studio 180 Design.  It arrived on Saturday and I was able to finish up today, just in time for the new round being released on Monday!

I really like how it turned out.  I will be using this technique again.  Linking up to Anja Quilts for the round 3.

Slow Sunday Stitching

I got a lot of slow stitching in this week, namely in the form of Ella Maria Deacon blocks.  I finished this one I had been working on last week.  I really like this one.

Then I got two more finished.  I had spent last week prepping all these blocks for applique.

I have two more prepped for applique, and this will be my slow stitching for this week.    After I finish these two, I will be all caught up for the new ones coming out on the 15th.

I'll be linking up with Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.    Head on over and check out what everyone else has been up to.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions last week on my shelf that was coming loose from the wall.  My grandson Jaeger was able to come over late last week, and we took the shelf down, moved it over and two of the three brackets are now in studs, and one that is not, is secured with drywall anchors.    I also went through all that "stuff" that was up there to begin with, and lightened the load, sorting through the books and magazines which will find new homes, removing a container with some heavy fabric, and putting some of my laces and trims I use for crazy quilting up there.  They are pretty light.  I still have a bunch of  "stuff"  on the counters I need to sort through and determine if I want or not.  I am trying to go through everything in that room and weeding out that I no longer want or need.

For the Stay at Home Round Robin this week the row this week was suggested by Anja Quilts for flying geese.  In looking through the various designers rows, I noticed that Emily @The Darling Dogwood did migrating flying geese and had gotten the idea from Deb Tucker's Studio 180 Design that has a technique sheet with the details.  I ordered one and have been waiting for it to arrive, so I can get my round done before Monday.  Thankfully it arrived in the mail today, and I started making the components.    I still have to put the four sides together, but they are coming out pretty well.

One Monthly Goal

Time to link up One Monthly Goal at Elm Street Quilts.  Patty has lined up some great sponsors as she always does for this month.  Many Thanks for all she does!

My One Monthly Goal for February is to make my project for the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop later this month.    I have not started yet.  I need to at least get my top done.

I'll probably  be using some of these fabrics, I haven't made up my mind yet.

I'll be linking up with Elm Street Quilts for One Monthly Goal.    Again thanks Patty for all you do and for keeping us motivated and on the straight and narrow!

January 350 Blocks Report

The goal for January was 31 blocks, but I was nowhere near that total.  Here's how I did.

Ella Maria Deacon blocks:  3

Crazy Quilt Pillow:  I counted this as 1 block

Kristen's Pillow Cover:  I counted this as 1 block

Stitchery from the One Stitch Club by Kathy Schmitz:  1 block.

Stay at Home Round Robin.   1 counted 2 rounds as 2 blocks, the piano border and the plus sign border

Christmas Mystery BOM:  1 block

Pieces From the Past Sew Along:  1 block

Hands All Around Alcotts:  The New BOM by Barbara Brackman

So my total for January is 11 blocks.  I'll be reporting my totals at Prairie Moon Quilts.
