Slow Sunday Stitching

Last week was a relatively easy week, other than Monday singing practice, and Wednesday pin basting for the guild.  

Last Sunday after the Begonia show, there were quite a few leftover plants, trays and trays of them.  I along with 10 other people offered to take some home and babysit them for a couple of weeks.  I first set them up in my living room on a banquet table but they apparently didn't like it in there.  They were real persnickety, and kept wilting, even though I watered them every day.  I don't know if the AC was bothering them or what was going on.  These are mostly the Rex Begonias with the really pretty leaves.  

I moved them to set by the patio doors, and on my kitchen table.  

The ones in the far background are mine on shelves by the bay window in the kitchen.  

Anyway they seem happier now.  I'll be taking part of them to the meeting next week, and part of them to a sale on October 1st.  

So with all my free time, I was able to work on the Peter Rabbit baby quilt that I need for a shower next Saturday.  I cut out four Goose Track blocks on my Accuquilt and sewed them together.  

After I got this far, I decided that setting the embroidered Peter Rabbit blocks with the tumbler blocks I had cut out was not going to work.  

So I pulled out this book I have had for a long time and decided to applique some rabbit blocks instead.  

I was able to quilt it today.  I'll have to get a better picture when I get the binding on.

For Slow Sunday Stitching this week I plan to put the binding on this and sew it down by hand.  

My daughters and granddaughter is coming over Sunday night and we plan to have a Chinese Chicken Salad for dinner and we are going to watch Elvis on HBO Max.

Slow Stitching Sunday, Long Post

 It was another mildly busy week for me, and really busy weekend.   Monday was my day of the Get On Board with Sewing Blog Hop, hosted by Melva @Melva Loves Scraps, and Brenda @Songbird Designs.    My post was right here.    I actually finished up a mystery QAL  hosted by Partners in Design on Facebook, a group of designers and quilters that came out with a new block every two weeks.  It had a quilting theme and was called Sew Lets Quilt Along.  I had my top finished, it just needed quilted.  

This week was also the board meeting for the quilt guild, and because of Labor Day we weren't able to meet at our usual facility at a local country club, so we met at Sew Katie Jean quilt shop.  They are the ones that are going to quilt my brother's lighthouse quilt and I inquired if they were getting caught up.  Several weeks ago she put me in line for quilting.  She told me to come back in about 2 weeks and ours would be next up.  

Wednesday I was able to get a cortisone shot in my bad knee, so it is feeling a bit better.  

Most of this week I spent working on a small wall hanging for the Sacramento Branch of the American Begonia Society's Show and Sale.  I'll be sharing my quit for the Queen of Gadget's Blog Hop coming up.   Daughter Katie and I joined the Begonia Society late last year.  We have always gone to the sale in September, Katie for 12 years, me for about 10 years.  We used to make it a day, get down to the sale first thing on Saturday morning, and buy our plants, and then go to lunch at a local French cafe that closed several years ago.  

We were always invited to join.  The meetings are once a month, and we usually can buy tickets and get several new Begonias a month, or people bring in freebies they have started.  Its a lot fun and the people are all so friendly and informative.  

I finished my wall hanging and took my 3 plants for the show Friday afternoon.  Friday evening we volunteered to set up for the show.  We had gotten many, many flats of begonias.  They each had I think 15 plants in them, but only one label.  So volunteers in another room were making labels and then we would put them in the pots and place them on tables for the sale on Saturday and Sunday.  This was the first year Katie and I worked, and we worked all three days, Friday afternoon/evening, Saturday and Sunday.  We worked/are working as tallying up the number of plants people are purchasing and figuring out how much people owe, and then directing them to either cash or credit line.  

There were two rooms full of Begonias this year, and some of the most gorgeous I have ever seen.  Because we helped set up Friday night we got to buy our plants Friday night at a slight discount.  I purchased 6 that night, and one more on Saturday.  I have a bunch of begonias to repot.

These were the ones I came home with, six on Friday night and one on Saturday.  

Sunday we are working 10-12 again, and because I would have to pick up my plants after 4 we are just going to stick around and help.  It's about 1/2 hour drive, and there is no sense coming home and going back down. 

This week I also finished the last of the Peter Rabbit blocks.  I cut out pieces for the rest of the quilt on my Accuquilt using the  Goose track die and the tumbler dies.  They are cut out of mostly 30's fabrics.  This is not the configuration, but what things are looking like right now.  

This is the backing, a pink toile with Peter Rabbit.  I have had this piece a long time, glad to finally use it.  

I have several projects I can work on for handwork, and Slow Stitching Sunday.  I have two Kathy Schmitz projects.

I have my sunflower quilt.

And my crochet shawl.

I was very saddened this week to hear about the death of Queen Elizabeth.  I admired and loved her her a great deal.   I saw this on Facebook this week.  

I noticed in an AARP email there are a bunch of shows detailing her life and Saturday night watched a show on Netflix called Elizabeth and Margaret, Love and Loyalty.  I plan to watch all the shows available.

Get On Board With Sewing Blog Hop, My Day

To celebrate National Sewing Month, Brenda @ Songbird Designs  and Melva @ Melva Loves Scraps  organized the Get On Board with Sewing Blog Hop.  I want to thank them for including me in this blog hop.  The entire schedule is listed below, as well as the giveaways.

The challenge was to " Sew something that ties into the theme and then write about it:  Your “something” could have a tropical or surf feel.  It can be clothing, a quilt, a bag, a toy, or whatever you choose!  It might include some tropical themed fabric or novelty print… or not.

About my sewing history:  When I started middle school I wanted to take choir.  My mother told me I could take Home Ec and learn to sew and cook instead, "I can sing anytime".   The Christmas of my 13th year I received this for Christmas.  

A Singer sewing machine in a wooden case.  I sewed on this until my husband got me a Singer Touch and Sew in about 1973.  During high school I made my own clothes, plus clothes for my mother and sister.  My mother did let me use her fancy dancy Singer when she asked me to make her clothes so I could use the zig-zag.  

Fast forward a number of years, and I was married and had my first child, and I still made quite a few of our clothes with the Touch and Sew.  When I married, I discovered my mother in law made quilts.  She would cut them out with scissors and templates and could hand piece and quilt a quilt in a month or maybe a little more.  I loved the quilts she made me.  In about 1994 I took some classes at the local quilt store and started my own quilting adventure.  My dear father-in-law had developed Alzheimer's and I figured with her caregiving of him, I wasn't going to get many more quilts.   Some of the first quilts I made were for my Auntie in Arkansas, my mother in law, and my mother.  

I have a funny story to tell about one of my other machines.  One time I visited my mother in law in San Diego and we put my father in law in day care and went to some quilt shops.  She was a great garage sale shopper, and they used to go out every weekend and check them out.  She could see a garage sale out of the corner of her eye and ask to stop.   I asked her if she had ever seen a featherweight at a garage sale, and she she hadn't.  We were driving home that day and she got to thinking about a machine she had found at a garage sale in the garbage.  She asked the sellers about it and they said she could have it for free.  She paid $65 to get it serviced.  So when we got back home she drug out a machine from the closet, and it was a featherweight.  She said since my birthday was coming up, I could have it.  So  I took it home on the plane with me as a carryon.  

My Project for the Get On Board with Sewing Blog Hop:  I decided to finish a quilt top I had made in 2019 as part of a mystery Quilt Along that was given by Partners in Design on Facebook.  This was a group of quilt designers/bloggers on Facebook.  Every two weeks we received a new block to work on.  It was called Sew Lets Quilt Along, and I posted about finishing the flimsy here on September 5, 2019.

So I finished quilting this top which has a quilting theme.

This was what the backing was.  My dear husband supported my quilting or any hobby I took up.  He asked me one time if I liked this fabric and I said I did.  I thought he was going to get a yard, but he bought the whole bolt on Amazon.  It is a Timeless Treasures fabric.

HQAL, Slow Sunday Stitching

Last week I didn't have many activities, so it was nice to take it easy for once.  Last week I joined a local singing group at the Community Center across the street from me.   They perform at local nursing homes etc.   They haven't been meeting for several months.    I haven't sung in a choir in quite a while, and my voice has changed from what it used to be.  I used to sing soprano and alto, but now it is more like alto and tenor.  The songs they are singing are from the 20's and 30's and so I am learning new material.  A few I know such as "Tale as Old as Time", "America" and "On a Clear Day".  It is a fun activity.  I have to say we aren't too good right now, we seem to be all over the place.  One of the guild members told us about it, actually the Chair of Community Services, so I decided to try it out.  

We were supposed to have a 5th Wednesday this week for Community Service where we take pin-basted quilts up to a local church.  The guild members come and bring their machines and we spend about 5 hours quilting, or piecing small tops, or make pillow cases for children's hospitals.  We had to cancel it last week as Cathy, the chair of Community Services developed vertigo in the parking lot of the community center the day before after the singing.  She spent half the day in the ER being tested for various things and all her tests were negative.  But she did not feel up to hauling a bunch of totes and things over to the church for 5th Wednesday.   

I have been working this week on my project for the Get on Board with Sewing Blog Hop celebrating National Sewing Month.  My day is on Monday.  I spent time quilting my project and sewing the binding down.  

I did some not-so exciting yard work and pulling weeds.  My daughter Kristen took me Friday to Costco.  They had gotten some salmon stuffed with crab and thought I would like it.  It was delicious and I have enough for 3 more meals.  I froze the other portions.  

Saturday night I enjoyed watching the new Rings of Power, Lord of the Rings movie on Prime.  John would have loved this, and the House of Dragons that comes on Sunday nights. 

For Slow Sunday Stitching I will be working on the last of the Peter Rabbit blocks.  This is part of my One Monthly Goal, to complete the Peter Rabbit quilt.  The baby shower is on September 24th.

One Monthly Goal, September

 

Time to make a goal for September for One Monthly Goal.  I didn't do too well last month.  I think I was a little over-ambitious.  My goal was to at least make a top for the Peter Rabbit baby quilt.  It involved embroidering 4 Peter Rabbit  blocks and then designing the rest of the quilt top.  I got three of the blocks embroidered, have one to go.  

So for my September One Monthly Goal I will finish embroidering this block and finish the quilt.  The baby shower is September 24th.
