HQAL, Slow Sunday Stitching

This week was spent chasing several squirrels.  I saw this one snatching up food in my yard the birds had dropped.   Last Sunday, Melisa at Pinkernpunkinquilting mentioned that Kathleen Tracy at A Sentimental Quilter was  hosting  a Civil War Mini Sew Along.  I have tons of Civil War repros, and scraps and joined in this sew along.  I am caught up on all three weeks of blocks now.

Also last Sunday on Instagram I discovered that Reproquiltlover had started a Scrappy Meets Thrift Challenge making economy blocks.  I chose the 2 inch size which means I will probably be making 250 blocks, unless I decide to do a smaller size.

I spent about 3 days rummaging through 3 bins of scraps and cutting them up.  I am paper piecing these, which are not my favorite thing to do, but this small I feel it is necessary.  I have had a few technical issues of the fabric folding up when I am trying to add a piece.  This is what I have accomplished so far.

I have thoughts of pursuing yet another squirrel, in the form of this quilt.  I haven't cut out any pieces yet, just thought of it.  I am attending a quilters day camp next week and have been trying to get my projects lined up.

My daughter Kristen showed me this Birch Gnome quilt pattern, and I purchased from Lake Girl Quilts

I love gnomes and love birches, we had some for 40+ years until had to take them down due to disease.  I need to look through my fabrics and see what I can find in the ways of blacks and grays, and something for the birches.

Also this week I quilted my SAHRR, and put the binding on.

My orchids are blooming like crazy,

I had a little mishap earlier in the week.  My daughter Kristen and I were about to go to aqua yoga, when I got notification a package had been delivered from Amazon.  I got the package, took it in the kitchen, and my box cutter was missing from the junk drawer.  I pulled out a paint scraper that John had sharpened for me and proceeded to cut my left hand.   John would have told me what a dumb thing I did, and you should never cut toward yourself.

Needless to say, there was no aqua yoga that night.  Kristen and granddaughter took me to the ER where I got 5 stitches.

What I will be working on for Slow Sunday Stitching is the binding on my SAHRR.

I will also continue hand quilting on this piece that will be a pillow top for my friend.

I will be linking up to Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.   Check out what is going on there, and also check out the Hand Quilting Links below.

Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching

It's been a whirlwind week for me.  In addition to my regular singing practice, and quilt pin basting I have had a lot more outside activities.

Most of the family attended granddaughter Klara's school performance of Starstruck.  Each of the grades, plus the teachers had a dance number with a different tune from a movie  Klara's third grade class performed "Life is a Highway" from the Cars movie.

Wednesday was my birthday and and the quilters that were at basting day took me to lunch at Panera.   Then that evening my family took me to our favorite Mexican place.  Grandson Jaeger, the slightly taller one, on the right, flew in from a New Mexico for a short break from college.

Thursday another friend took me to brunch.  Then Thursday night my 2 daughters planned a painting party for me, it included a couple of my daughters friends, granddaughter Kyleigh, Jandra who is her boyfriend Drew's grandmother, and Victoria Drew's mother.  It was such a fun evening.  We got to chose what project we wanted to work on.  When we arrived they had our wooden boards prepared, and the stencils cut out.   We weeded out the remaining parts on the stencils and then painted our boards.

Kyleigh, Drew and Jandra

They had tons of projects you could choose from

Jandra made this tray for Drew and Kyleigh

Victoria, Jandra and me

Daughters Katie and Kristen are on the right

This was my completed project.

Friday Kyleigh, Jandra and Victoria and I went to lunch too for my birthday.  Needless to say, I have had a lot of leftovers in my frig, and never felt so loved.

Saturday night was grandson Keaton's high school prom at his school.   Keaton and Addie make such a cute couple.  They are juniors in high school.

This week I also received my choices for the $50 gift card I got One Of The Flockwho have a great Etsy shop with wools, felts and all sorts of great kits.  I won this on the Autumn Jubilee going on at From My Carolina Home.    I really appreciate their generosity in this prize.

For slow stitching this week, I will be working on my woolie gnome project, and putting binding and hand sewing it down on my brother Bill's quilt.  This is going to take awhile I think.

HQAL, Slow Sunday Stitching

Last week I didn't have many activities, so it was nice to take it easy for once.  Last week I joined a local singing group at the Community Center across the street from me.   They perform at local nursing homes etc.   They haven't been meeting for several months.    I haven't sung in a choir in quite a while, and my voice has changed from what it used to be.  I used to sing soprano and alto, but now it is more like alto and tenor.  The songs they are singing are from the 20's and 30's and so I am learning new material.  A few I know such as "Tale as Old as Time", "America" and "On a Clear Day".  It is a fun activity.  I have to say we aren't too good right now, we seem to be all over the place.  One of the guild members told us about it, actually the Chair of Community Services, so I decided to try it out.

We were supposed to have a 5th Wednesday this week for Community Service where we take pin-basted quilts up to a local church.  The guild members come and bring their machines and we spend about 5 hours quilting, or piecing small tops, or make pillow cases for children's hospitals.  We had to cancel it last week as Cathy, the chair of Community Services developed vertigo in the parking lot of the community center the day before after the singing.  She spent half the day in the ER being tested for various things and all her tests were negative.  But she did not feel up to hauling a bunch of totes and things over to the church for 5th Wednesday.

I have been working this week on my project for the Get on Board with Sewing Blog Hop celebrating National Sewing Month.  My day is on Monday.  I spent time quilting my project and sewing the binding down.

I did some not-so exciting yard work and pulling weeds.  My daughter Kristen took me Friday to Costco.  They had gotten some salmon stuffed with crab and thought I would like it.  It was delicious and I have enough for 3 more meals.  I froze the other portions.

Saturday night I enjoyed watching the new Rings of Power, Lord of the Rings movie on Prime.  John would have loved this, and the House of Dragons that comes on Sunday nights.

For Slow Sunday Stitching I will be working on the last of the Peter Rabbit blocks.  This is part of my One Monthly Goal, to complete the Peter Rabbit quilt.  The baby shower is on September 24th.

This next week will be another busy one.  I have a Board meeting for the guild.  I also have an appointment with my Dr. hopefully to get a shot.  Friday I have my mini meeting with guild members.  I also need to take my begonias down Friday afternoon that I plan to enter at the Begonia Show this weekend.  Somewhere in the meantime I also need to finish the mini begonia quilt I plan to donate at the show.  Daughter Katie and I are working both days at the show, Saturday and Sunday.  I also need to make some potato salad and brownies  for the workers at the show.

Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching

I spent 2 hours tonight trying to transfer photos from my i-Phone to my PC.  I don't know how the settings got changed in I-Cloud, but my PC wouldn't import photos.  What a hassle!

I think I forgot to check in for the last Hand Quilt Along, the last time I checked in was October.  I did get my Handi Quilter Moxie put together.  The second thing I quilted was my sister's Christmas Quilt.  I finished the binding last weekend.

Check out the other Hand Quilting Links below.

I had some Christmas decoration helpers last weekend that helped decorate my tree, my least favorite part.  My daughter made a video of it on Instagram here.

Grandson Keaton got under the tables and lit up all the houses.

What I will be working on for my Slow Sunday Stitching this week will be this month's stitchery from Kathy Schmitz's One Stitch At a Time Club.  I haven't traced it out yet, but I'm anxious to start this one.

Hand Quilt Along, Slow Sunday Stitching, Sweet Land of Liberty

Hard to believe another 3 weeks has flown by where we report our hand work.  Twice the past couple of weeks I have been without handwork and have had to get busy arranging more.  Usually I have a stack sitting on the couch beside me.

I finished one of the redwork nursery rhyme blocks, Mary had a Little Lamb

And I started on Simple Simon.  I'm trying to work on these an hour each night.

Another thing I have finished this week was April's quilt-along on the Sweet Land of Liberty with Lori of Humble Quilts.

Today I also spent prepping my last Flourishes block, not much to show right now but this will be hand applique also.

Visit the other hand quilt along links below and see what everyone is doing.

Hand Quilt Along

It seems that these last three weeks have raced by.  Sadly today I don't have much I can share.  I'm participating in the upcoming Dust Off a Quilt Book Blog Hop hosted by Bea at BeaQuilter February 18-22.  My day is Wednesday the 20th.  I have been working daily piecing the parts of my quilt that are pieced, and hand appliquing and embroidering the details.

We had tons of rain earlier this week, and I discovered that part of the gutters in the back were unhooked from the back, pouring water over the sides and dumping it right by the house.  The part of the house that has a sunken living room, where my disabled husband spends his days and nights.  We have had trouble with this room before, because of cracks in the foundation, of water seeping up from the foundation.  We have replaced the carpet once about 8-9 years ago.  But anyway, a portion of my week was spent cleaning out the gutter downspouts, and screwing the gutter back up where it was loose.  Hopefully we won't have this problem anymore this year.  But the room is starting to smell moldy.  The carpet is damp and I have towels all over the place.  These repair issues are things DH used to do.  I spent quite a bit of time looking for the socket that fit the screws on the gutters.

Anyway, the book I chose for the Dust Off a Quilt Book Blog Hop is something I wanted to make since it came out in 1996.  I have had flannels set aside for this quilt for years.  I'm making it for DH,and it involves quite a bit of applique.  In the book, the applique pieces needed to be enlarged 203%, much to much for my printer.  So several weeks ago I went up to the Fedex Copy Center and asked for help and the guy in the section where you copy it yourself helped me.  I came home and proceeded to applique 4/6 of these blocks with what he gave me.  I kept wondering why there was so much background left in the main unit, which I had appliqued and embroidered.  Then I was preparing the 5th block and I saw the size of the unit in the book and realized there was no way what he did for me was 203%.  So that one I did myself on my printer and taped the pieces together.  But the large unit, I took back up to Fedex and spoke with a guy who has been there for years, ever since my daughter worked there when she was in college.  He copied that piece on a large scale copier and did not charge me since I made 2 trips!

I found I do not have any large enough pieces of that background to put the new unit on, and no other backgrounds that would fit it with the original color scheme I had, so I picked off all the applique and embroidery which probably took about 3 hours.  DH said just put the new one over the old one, but I am appliquing flannel on a flannel background, and it would just poof up too much.

So right now, that is what I am working on as handwork this week.  I should be finished with the flimsy in this project in a few days and I should have plenty of time to quilt it before the blog hop.

Hand Quilt ALong, Slow Sunday Stitching

Have sort of been slacking on the hand-work the past week, ever since the Christmas rush.  I did get one of the nursery

This one is Ding Dong Bell (from Wikipedia)

Ding, dong, bell,
Pussy’s in the well.
Who put her in?
Little Johnny Thin.
Who pulled her out?
Little Tommy Stout.
What a naughty boy was that,
To try to drown poor pussy cat,
Who never did him any harm,
But chased up all the mice in the farmer's barn.

I'm trying to finish up these blocks for my sweet sister-in-law.  There were 20 blocks originally. I have 4 more to do.  She is going to set them into a quilt for her first granddaughter.

I'll try to get one more done before they get here on New Year's Day.  They spent a week and a half in a beachside condo in Brookings, Oregon, and will be heading back to Southern California.  Right now I have 4 to give her, hope to make it 5.

Next on my list, besides the redwork, I plan to get this block prepped for applique.  I originally started this BOM in 1998, after going to Phoenix for an Interquilt convention, an online quilting group.  There, I met for the first time Susan Nixon @ DesertSky Quilting, Moira McSpadden @ The Quilted Snail, Randy @ Barrister's Block, and Lori @ Humble Quilts.  I have pictures of Lori showing her fabulous Dear Jane Quilt.

Anyway, Susan and Moira took us to the Quilted Apple Quilt Shop and I fell in love with this BOM.  I bought a few of the patterns and then asked Susan to pick up the rest when I returned home.  I hand appliqued 1 block and that was as far as I got.  I came across the block recently, and then found the patterns.

This was the block I have finished.

The whole quilt.

The block I need to prep.

I also plan to stitch another one of these stitcheries from Kathy Schmitz, because love how Kyleigh's came out.

I will also be linking up with Kathy's Quilts for Slow Sunday Stitching.
