One Monthly Goal-June

Earlier in the month, I set my goal here to finish hand-quilting the center section of this Sarah Sporrer BOM called Time Began in a Garden.

It looked like this when I started.  It was half quilted.  The binding is just folded over and sewn down.  

It will eventually be joined with the other pieces I have finished, with a few more left to do.

Wednesday Wait Loss-Flower Quilts

This one, Primitive Lilies a pattern by Patchwork Pieces I recently finished and gifted a 2018 high school graduate, friend of my granddaughter,.

This one is part of a raw edge quilt, actually the center piece.  I still have about 4 more blocks to do.  It is called Time Began in a Garden by Sarah Sporrer, still a UFO.

I recently finished this one, called Wooley Flower Sampler by Connie Huddleson.  I had the top done, just finished quilting this UFO.

This was a quilt I finished in 2000, designer Terry Clothier Thompson, hand appliqued, machine quilted called Mrs. Brown's Quilt

FALL INTO A QAL, BLOCK 3

The third block for the Fall Into A QAL was released today, designed by Sherry Shish at Powered by Quilting.  The pattern can be found here for the bonfire block.  I'm procrastinating on working on crazy quilted my Boho purse, so I got right on this block!

I decided to do a night time sky for mine.

THROWBACK THURSDAY #1, DEAR JANE

This is a Throwback Thursday post, quilts we have made before our blogging days. I am linking up with Sandra at Musings of a Menopausal Melon-mmm quilts. 

I can't find that I blogged about my Dear Jane Quilt.   I started it in 1997, 3 years after I began quilting, and finished it in 2003.  I would do rows of blocks, and then put it away for long stretches.  Then I would get excited again about it and start working on it again. 

Jane Stickle was the woman who made this quilt during the Civil War, in 1863 and finished her quilt in 1868.  The quilt hangs in the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont.    Brenda Manages Papdakis became fascinated with the quilt after she saw the quilt in the "Book Plain and Fancy:  Vermont's People and Their Quilts as a Reflection of America" by Deanna Bister and Richard Cleaveland.  Brenda began drafting the blocks from the photos in Plain and Fancy and ended up writing the book "Dear Jane, the Two Hundred, Twenty-Five patterns from the 1863 Jane A. Stickle Quilt"

My quilt  was a  combination of applique, paper pieced and pieced.  It was hand quilted by a woman named Carol Morris.  It is composed entirely of Civil War reproduction fabrics.  I did not use the same one twice.  I still have A LOT of these fabrics left.  Anyway this is my quilt:

ANOTHER UFO BITES THE DUST

I finished up another UFO, this one dating back to 2007 when I finished the top. I wasn't sure what I was going to do to quilt it, then I closed my home-based transcription business, and went to work outside the home and didn't have much time to quilt during that period. Since I have been retired in May of 2017, I have been trying to finish up UFO's and get caught up on my grandchildren's quilts. Three of them got quilts last Fall for their birthdays (was not back into blogging at that time), and I just got Kyleigh's graduation quilt done.  I have another 3 years to make one for Jaeger.  

So even though this was not on my Finish-A-Long list, I was anxious to get it quilted.  It was a BOM, a Wooly Flowers Sampler by Starry Pines Pattern Company, designed by Connie Huddleson.  This quilt was wool appliqued on flannel.  It was so nice to work with.  The backing is some really cute flannel too.

The only thing left on my Finish-A-Long list is my crazy quilted Boho purse.  I need to get going on this, I have barely started.  

FALL INTO A QAL, BLOCK 2

April Adams' Harvest basket was this week's block on the Fall Into a QAL, and I love it!  You can download the block here.  I love baskets, and I appliqued some pumpkins and corn in mine.  Thanks April for such a great block!

One Monthly Goal

I've been seeing all these One Monthly Goal posts and decided to join in.  This is the link-up for One Monthly Goal for June on Elm Street Quilts

My goal for June is to finish this center section of this Sarah Sporrer Time Began in a Garden BOM.  This is a quilt as you go project, ad I have all the stitchery done on this block, and I was working on quilting it when I stopped.  I would like to finish this large section, and then I can work on the last 3 blocks.  

So my goal is to finish the quilting, and then finish the binding on this center section

2018 Finish-A-Long, Q2 - 3rd Project finished, Kyleigh's Graduation

These past 2 weeks have been busy ones.  First I got a frantic call from Kyleigh asking if I could fix her jeans.  

She just wanted top ones on the left leg to be patched.  I first put interfacing on the inside and then made the big patch.  She was thrilled, as they are her favorite jeans.  I have a feeling she is going to need the right leg top hole fixed too before too long. 

Last night was Kyleigh's graduation from high school.  Quite exciting around here, and hard to believe she will be leaving in the fall for college back east.   It was hotter than blue blazes last night but we are so proud of her and all she has accomplished.  I am going to miss her terribly!

This is my third finish in the Finish-A-Long.  My list for the 2nd quarter Finish-A-Long is here.   It was a flimsy I had finished in 10/06 called Primitive Lilies by Patchwork Pieces.  I saved it for so long as I wanted to quilt something special in all those blank blocks, and I did, but I cannot capture it in the pictures.    I plan to gift it to one of Kyleigh's friends who admired Kyleigh's quilts I have made her in the past.  She was trying to get Kyleigh to part with one of them since I made her graduation quilt.  

2018 Finish-A-Long, Q2 - 2nd Project finished

This week, I finished #1 on my Finish-A-Long list for quarter 2. This is a graduation quilt for our oldest granddaughter Kyleigh.   The project started out as swap blocks from a number of years ago.  They consisted of Laurel Burch's line Jungle Songs and black Kona cotton. I decided to add a panel from Laurel Burch's Ocean Songs with a mermaid, and I made a braided border.  I ended up making about 13 more blocks than the original swap blocks.  To be able to quilt it on my frame, I was not able to add any further borders for the outside.  As it was, I had to go back and separately quilt 4 inches on either side that was too long for my frame.

I have no clue why when I bought the fabric for this swap I bought so much extra but I was able to use up a lot of it on the back of the quilt.  The quilt measures about 91 x 91 inches.  

Two more items on my Finish-A-Long list, and I have actually almost finished an item that wasn't on the list,  quilting a Wooly Flowers sampler, a UFO from 2007.  

FALL INTO A QAL, BLOCK 1, KYLEIGH'S COLLEGE SIGNING

Block 1 of the Fall Into QAL was released today.  Vanda Chittenden is the designer of the cute hedgehog block.  The block can be found here with her tutorial and instructions.  I could hardly wait to get started today.

My other excitement for the day was our granddaughter Kyleigh's college signing.  She will be going to Regis Colllege in Weston, Mass in the fall.  This is a picture about 15 years ago.

Finish-A-Long Quarter 2, First One Bites the Dust

I've been working really hard on my Finish-A-Long List.  In this post from April 12th, I described my goals for this second quarter of the Finish-A-Long. 

Item #3 was an Angel Wreath quilt and cushion to finish.  My picture of the project somehow didn't make it into the post, but this is the before picture.

This UFO was from 1997, I hgad completed the top, and started handquilting it.  When I started in April, the wreath sections were quilted, but nothing else.  This was a Linda Brannock pattern out of the book Gardening for Quilters.  I have worked really hard the last several weeks finishing up the quilting, and I completed this yesterday,.  Today I completed assembling the cushion .

I am so thrilled to have these 2 items done, and I appreciate the Finish-A-Long for spurring me on.  

Well back to the next item on my list, quilting my granddaughter Kyleigh's quilt.  It is on the frame and has been started.

Sad and Disappointed

February 9th, 2008 I posted about how I had started on the quilt below. It was Sweet Land of Liberty by Cheri Saffiote-Payne.  I made the first block.  I had the physical pattern.  

Apparently life got in the way, and it was set aside.  I remember loaning this pattern to someone, but I never got it back.  Lori from Humble Quilts is working on this as a QAL.  This is month 5.  I thought I would pull out the pattern yesterday and start trying to to catch up.  

What I ended up doing was tearing my sewing room closet apart, and another couple of hiding places to the conclusion I do not have the pattern anymore.  I found A BUNCH more UFO's that I had not previously listed in my journal where I keep track.  I took some pics of my semi-organized sewing room.  I didn't take a pic of the messed up corner though!

Behind those roosters (another UFO) is a double closet shelf that goes to the ceiling that is stuffed with projects.

The brown antique dresser under the counter has 14" drawers, with more UFO's.  Right next to that are some plastic drawers with part of my Civil War Reproduction fabs.  The plastic drawers off to the right have laces, ribbons and trims for my crazy quilting.  

This is a cabinet DH made and I stenciled.  This contains my wools, wool projects and homespuns.

This is a cabinet DH made that is on a lazy-Susan type deal that will turn 360 degrees and has pie-shaped drawers.  A lot of my notions, thread, and children's fabric are in here.  

There is a dry sink with more homespuns and flannels, a fairy doll I made years ago, that still needs to be clothed.  I have bookshelves around the whole room.  

This is where I sew.  Underneath this countertop is bins of red, white and blue fabric, and 3 of those containers are crazy quilt fabrics.  

Anyway, I never found what I was looking for the Sweet Land of Liberty Pattern.  Guess I will get the measurements on Lori's blog and try to figure it out myself.  

Kyleigh's Flimsy Done

I had a busy week last week.  I finished up Kyleigh's graduation quilt to a flimsy stage.  I never did find my 2 blocks, and ended up making 3 more as one of the blocks was too small, and 2 are AWOL.  I just got the batting for this quilt, but am going to quilt a couple of others first.  This is the finished top.  It is about 91 x 91.

I also finished Buttermilk Basin's A Tisket-A-Tasket sew along from a couple of weekends ago and it came out really cute I think.  

I think next up to quilt is this Wooly Flowers Sampler by Starry Pines Pattern Company.  It has been finished since 2003, just not quilted.  This was not on my original list for the Finish-A-Long, but I feel a need to get started quilting it.  It shouldn't take too long.  

I have been quilting since probably around 1996 or so, and have had a Handiquilter rail set up since the first ones came out. This was before they had a Handiquilter machine, so I use a Juki.   All I have basically done on it is meander. I am challenging myself to do something besides meander.  I have been watching lots of videos to do something besides meander.  

So tomorrow I will load this one up, and hopefully my thread won't shred like it usually does.  I have bought some Aurofill thread.  

Well off to think about dinner.  

Weekly Progress 4/15-4/20/18

I have made some progress on granddaughter Kyleigh's graduation quilt.  I have the center section together.  

To take this picture, I moved the side blocks off to the side stacked on top of one another so I know where I had them placed.  Somehow in the process I have misplaced 2 blocks.  They hadn't been moved from the dining room floor, but they have disappeared overnight.  So I have to search more or make more blocks.  

I am participating  in Buttermilk Basin's  3 day A Tisket, A Tasket stich and sew-a-long and finished yesterdays block.  

I am off to pick up 2 grandsons who are going to help me with my yard work and visit with Papa. 

2018 Finish-A-Long -Quarter 2

Well it has been 4 years and 2 months since my last post.  The last years I was working out of the home were just too much for me to blog too.  I have since retired last year, and am back to reading blogs and am going to participate in the 2018 FAL (Finish-A-Long) to finish up some of my UFO's.
My list is going to tend on the small side as I have the care of my disabled husband.

My list of projects for Quarter II includes the following

1)    Granddaughter Kyleigh's graduation quilt.  I can't even hazard a guess as to how old this UFO is.   This consists of swap blocks made from Laurel Burch Jungle Songs fabric and a Laurel Burch mermaid panel from Ocean Songs.  I have been working on making additional blocks to make this a decent sized quilt.  I need to get this put together and quilted by the end of May.

2)   Yellow Peony Quilt.  This has been a UFO since 10/06.  It just needs to be quilted and then I will be gifting it to one of Kyleigh's friends who is also graduating this year.

3)  Angel Wreath wall hanging and pillow.  This is one of my oldest UFO's, from when I first started quilting in 1998.  I started out hand quilting shortly after I finished it.  I have kept setting it aside, and a lot of the time it gets  hidden or things stacked on top, so I forget about it.  It is probably 1/2 quilted.  The borders need to be finished.  There is also a matching pillow top that has been quilted.  I just need to assemble the pillow.  I really want to finish this by Christmas.

4)  Make a new Boho bag.  This is one of my crazy quilting projects.  I pieced the front top of the bag about 2 years ago, and gathered together my embellishments, but never got around to embellishing it.  I want to finish this by the end of June as a challenge on a crazy quilt group I am on.

Shawn's Cell Phone Case

I recently finished up and delivered a new cell phone case to one of my coworkers.  This is the third one she has had me make.  This is the second one for her, and she had me make one for her mother too.  She likes to have a long chain on it and she wears it over her shoulder like a purse.

My pictures don't do the case justice, and you can't see my stitching at all.  I will have to use a different
camera the next time and see if I can do better.  The little picture on it was of a Peacock.

My Beautiful Mermaid Block

A number of months ago I was chatting with Nicki Lee on Words with Friends and we decided to swap crazy quilting blocks and embellish each others.  Mine arrived first embellished because Nicki Lee forgot to send her block to me, and sent it with my finished block.  And when it arrived, I was so excited because it was exactly what I had in mind.  It is absolutely gorgeous
and I look at it every day, deciding how I am going to use it.  

Granddaughter Kyleigh was here on New Year's Eve, and we are working on a new Boho bag for her.  And we were looking at my mermaid block for inspiration.  Kyleigh's new Boho is going
to be an underwater scene and it has a whale in it.  Kyleigh was doing an excellent job.  I told her she needed to sew tiny stitches on the embellishments or else things would start falling off or coming undone.  She did just as I said.  I am going to finish the front up.  We watched 3 "chick flicks that night" and had a wonderful evening.  This was after she helped me for 5 hours putting the Christmas decorations away and up in the attic again!

Well I guess I had better get my laundry started and some more things up in the attic, so I can watch my taped Downton Abbey!
