Mermaid Cushion, Good Mail Day

Back in May, Joy@Days Filled with Joy  with her daughter as the artist had a mermaid-stitch-a-long.  I haven't had a chance to stitch on mine until several days ago.  I decided it would make a perfect gift for my dear sister-in-law who loves mermaid and all things ocean like I do.  So I embroidered one of my  mermaids.

                   

I decided to make her into a cushion.  I added fringe, though it is hard to tell.  I really have trouble with lighting in my house, and I even took it outside, and that was too bright, and too hot (102 today).  I  decided to use a lighthouse backing, as both my brother and sister-in-law love lighthouses,as I do.

Last month, I was featured on Wednesday Wait Loss here  on the Inquiring Quilter, and I also happened to win the Island Batik Stash Builder Roll, which arrived today.  Love the colors, and will have to think of a special project.  Thanks so much Jennifer!

2018 FINISH-A-LONG, Q3

My proposed list for quarter 3 is as follows:

QUILTING PROJECTS:

1.  Embroider 3 Redwork Nursery Rhyme blocks.  Recently I found a BOM project I started long, long ago.  I had 9 blocks out of 20 completed.  I gifted these blocks to my dear SIL to put together for her new granddaughter.  I told her I would finish up the embroidery on these blocks, and she could put the sashing on them and tie the quilt.  So I plan to get these 3 blocks done this quarter.  The story behind this redwork quilt is that a 10-year-old girl named Helen Wells produced a Redwork Children's Quilt i 1910 using her favorite nursery rhymes and storybook characters.  I plan to embroider Mother Goose, Three Blind Mice and Mary Had a Little Lamb

2.  Great Pumpkin Quilt.  This is another old BOM from 2006 that I fused the first 4 blocks down, but never sewed them down.  In fact part of my vines are falling off.  I would like to get these 4 blocks sewn down,

3.  Prepare and hand-applique 2 Flourishes Blocks, Block 8 and Block 9.  This is another old BOM project, a Piece of Cake Designs. I love to hand-applique.  Knowing this,  the quilt shop owner in my town asked if I would hand-applique this BOM and she would provide me with the pattern and fabric to make my own.  I made the shop quilt, and I got to block 7 of my own quilt and put everything in a bag.  

4.  QUILT OF VALOR:  I would like at least get a flimsy made for Quilt of Valor.  I'm not sure I will have time to quilt it, as I have a couple of trips planned, but I at least want to get it to flimsy stage.  I have some red, white and blue swap blocks I'm going to use.  I have quite a few blocks from friends Susan Nixon at Desertsky Quilting, and Moira McSpadden at  The Quilted Snail in looking at the labels.  

CRAZY QUILTING PROJECT:  

5.   I would like to finish up this crazy quilt block and mail it back to its owner.  I participated in a swap several years ago. and due to life issues, neither of us have returned the other's block.  I hope to get this one finished.  I still need to do the embroidery and beading on this one.  

SEWING PROJECTS:

6.  Doll Clothes for Klara's baby.  I plan on giving this doll to my youngest granddaughter for her birthday in October and I would like to make some clothes before I give it to her.  

7.  Cushion for Kyleigh.  My granddaughter Kyleigh wanted me to make her a cushion with this mermaid fabric.  Her birthday is in August and I hope to get it done for that, and before she leaves for college.  

KNITTING PROJECT

8.  Sweater for Klara.  I also hope to start and finish this sweater for granddaughter Klara's BD in October.  It seems like a small project so hopefully will be able to complete it.

PENNY RUG PROJECT

9.  Complete Penny Rug Project "O My Stars".  I got this as a kit.  Pattern came from Barb Adams and Alma Allen's book HIGDON CAMP-1924.  I have all the pieces cut out, just need to buttonhole stitch them together and then attach to backing.

Think that is it for this quarter.  This will keep me REALLY BUSY!

One Monthly Goal-July 2018

Patty from Elm Street Quilts is hosting One Monthly Goal,  and the link-up is now open for July. 

Just like my goal for June which I talked about here, my OMG for July is to continue working on this project, a BOM project called Time Began in a Garden by Sarah Sporrer.

I have 4 blocks left to do.  These are all hand done, it is raw edge primitive applique, some embroidery, and then hand quilted, and the backing excess is folded over to make the binding, So it is a quilt as you go project.  Then it is assembled and embroidery are added to the seams at the end.  

These are the 2 blocks I plan to get done in July:  

The sunflowers and the winter berries.  I put off doing those berries just about as long as I could.  I don't know why.  It is not as if I am trying to needle turn perfect circles.  It is just primitive raw edge.  

I'm excited for this project to be nearing the end.  The back of the pattern gives the year as 2000.  It is an old UFO.

Fall Into a QAL, Block 4

Block 4 of the Fall Into a QAL this week is a Sunflower block designed by Sandy Maxfield of Sandy Star Designs and is available for download.  

After finishing my Boho bag this morning, I wanted to get this block done.  One of my favorite flowers are sunflowers.

Boho Bag

When I joined the 2018 Finish-A-Long in Quarter 2, the last of the items on my list was finishing my Boho bag, which was just a pieced flap at that time. You can see it here.    I finished the bag this morning.  This happens to be the 7th one I have made, I have 2 others, I made 2 for granddaughter Kyleigh and I have sold 2 as commissions.  

This was the front of the bag after I finished the embellishment and added the trim.  The beautiful under the sea laces, trims I bought from Nicki Lee's Etsy shop Raviolee Dreams.  She puts together wonderful under the sea packages with laces, seaweed, shells, charms, fish, mermaids, seahorses etc. I have bought multiple from her and am always thrilled with the packages.  You just tell her what you are looking for and your price range and she will make you a package up.  

This was the inside flap, which I stenciled.  It reads  "She sits quietly by the Sea.  She held a seashell to her ear and listened to mermaid songs of the SEA.  Softly at that moment her Happiness floated like the waves of the SEA."

This is a vintage lace piece I sewed onto the front of the bag, under the flap as a pocket.

Its hard to see but there is another pocket here for the inside with a magnetic closure, which I concealed with a flower.

I Was Featured On Wednesday Wait Loss #73

I was reading the blogs I follow last night and imagine my surprise to find I was featured on Wednesday Wait Loss #73 on The Inquiring Quilter.  Last week Jennifer had asked for pictures of flower quilts, and I posted 4 of mine here.  I also was the lucky winner of the Island Batik Stash Builder Roll.  I was almost too excited to sleep!  I'm still smiling today!

I should have another post later on today, as I am in the process of assembling my Boho purse, which was #4 of my goals on 2018 Finish-A-Long Quarter 2.  

One Monthly Goal-June

Earlier in the month, I set my goal here to finish hand-quilting the center section of this Sarah Sporrer BOM called Time Began in a Garden.

It looked like this when I started.  It was half quilted.  The binding is just folded over and sewn down.  

It will eventually be joined with the other pieces I have finished, with a few more left to do.

Wednesday Wait Loss-Flower Quilts

This one, Primitive Lilies a pattern by Patchwork Pieces I recently finished and gifted a 2018 high school graduate, friend of my granddaughter,.

This one is part of a raw edge quilt, actually the center piece.  I still have about 4 more blocks to do.  It is called Time Began in a Garden by Sarah Sporrer, still a UFO.

I recently finished this one, called Wooley Flower Sampler by Connie Huddleson.  I had the top done, just finished quilting this UFO.

FALL INTO A QAL, BLOCK 3

The third block for the Fall Into A QAL was released today, designed by Sherry Shish at Powered by Quilting.  The pattern can be found here for the bonfire block.  I'm procrastinating on working on crazy quilted my Boho purse, so I got right on this block!

I decided to do a night time sky for mine.

THROWBACK THURSDAY #1, DEAR JANE

This is a Throwback Thursday post, quilts we have made before our blogging days. I am linking up with Sandra at Musings of a Menopausal Melon-mmm quilts. 

I can't find that I blogged about my Dear Jane Quilt.   I started it in 1997, 3 years after I began quilting, and finished it in 2003.  I would do rows of blocks, and then put it away for long stretches.  Then I would get excited again about it and start working on it again. 

Jane Stickle was the woman who made this quilt during the Civil War, in 1863 and finished her quilt in 1868.  The quilt hangs in the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont.    Brenda Manages Papdakis became fascinated with the quilt after she saw the quilt in the "Book Plain and Fancy:  Vermont's People and Their Quilts as a Reflection of America" by Deanna Bister and Richard Cleaveland.  Brenda began drafting the blocks from the photos in Plain and Fancy and ended up writing the book "Dear Jane, the Two Hundred, Twenty-Five patterns from the 1863 Jane A. Stickle Quilt"

My quilt  was a  combination of applique, paper pieced and pieced.  It was hand quilted by a woman named Carol Morris.  It is composed entirely of Civil War reproduction fabrics.  I did not use the same one twice.  I still have A LOT of these fabrics left.  Anyway this is my quilt:

ANOTHER UFO BITES THE DUST

I finished up another UFO, this one dating back to 2007 when I finished the top. I wasn't sure what I was going to do to quilt it, then I closed my home-based transcription business, and went to work outside the home and didn't have much time to quilt during that period. Since I have been retired in May of 2017, I have been trying to finish up UFO's and get caught up on my grandchildren's quilts. Three of them got quilts last Fall for their birthdays (was not back into blogging at that time), and I just got Kyleigh's graduation quilt done.  I have another 3 years to make one for Jaeger.  

So even though this was not on my Finish-A-Long list, I was anxious to get it quilted.  It was a BOM, a Wooly Flowers Sampler by Starry Pines Pattern Company, designed by Connie Huddleson.  This quilt was wool appliqued on flannel.  It was so nice to work with.  The backing is some really cute flannel too.

The only thing left on my Finish-A-Long list is my crazy quilted Boho purse.  I need to get going on this, I have barely started.  

FALL INTO A QAL, BLOCK 2

April Adams' Harvest basket was this week's block on the Fall Into a QAL, and I love it!  You can download the block here.  I love baskets, and I appliqued some pumpkins and corn in mine.  Thanks April for such a great block!

One Monthly Goal

I've been seeing all these One Monthly Goal posts and decided to join in.  This is the link-up for One Monthly Goal for June on Elm Street Quilts

My goal for June is to finish this center section of this Sarah Sporrer Time Began in a Garden BOM.  This is a quilt as you go project, ad I have all the stitchery done on this block, and I was working on quilting it when I stopped.  I would like to finish this large section, and then I can work on the last 3 blocks.  

So my goal is to finish the quilting, and then finish the binding on this center section

2018 Finish-A-Long, Q2 - 3rd Project finished, Kyleigh's Graduation

These past 2 weeks have been busy ones.  First I got a frantic call from Kyleigh asking if I could fix her jeans.  

She just wanted top ones on the left leg to be patched.  I first put interfacing on the inside and then made the big patch.  She was thrilled, as they are her favorite jeans.  I have a feeling she is going to need the right leg top hole fixed too before too long. 

Last night was Kyleigh's graduation from high school.  Quite exciting around here, and hard to believe she will be leaving in the fall for college back east.   It was hotter than blue blazes last night but we are so proud of her and all she has accomplished.  I am going to miss her terribly!

This is my third finish in the Finish-A-Long.  My list for the 2nd quarter Finish-A-Long is here.   It was a flimsy I had finished in 10/06 called Primitive Lilies by Patchwork Pieces.  I saved it for so long as I wanted to quilt something special in all those blank blocks, and I did, but I cannot capture it in the pictures.    I plan to gift it to one of Kyleigh's friends who admired Kyleigh's quilts I have made her in the past.  She was trying to get Kyleigh to part with one of them since I made her graduation quilt.
